Caldwell spoke as though limits made the confinement reasonable.
Then he revealed why the dinner guests had been gathered.
Halcyon was preparing to acquire a private data company that tracked tenants through payment histories, medical debt, and school records. The system identified neighborhoods whose residents were least able to challenge displacement.
Several men at the table had invested secretly.
The housing fraud was not a collection of isolated thefts.
It was a business model.
Caldwell threatened to expose every investor unless they funded his defense. That was why influential guests initially remained silent. Each feared that helping Laura would uncover his own participation.
Vincent surrendered his complete communications archive.
Three guests followed.
Others attempted to destroy evidence and were charged separately.
Caldwell was indicted for unlawful confinement, conspiracy, fraud, bribery, and obstruction. His cooperation reduced none of the public damage.
During his final meeting with Vincent, he asked, “You think destroying us will help those families?”
“No,” Vincent replied. “Returning their homes, money, and legal power might.”
Caldwell smiled bitterly.
“You always needed to believe you were different.”
