Chapter 11 - THE BOY Trely ended when security guards seized a teenage boy near the back of the housing center.He wore a faded delivery jacket and held a damaged laptop against his chest. While donors and city officials watched, one guard twisted his arm and called him a trespasser.
“I came through the public entrance,” the boy protested.
A wealthy developer demanded that he be removed before the photographs began.
Sophie stepped down from the stage.
“What did he do?”
“He disturbed an invitation-only ceremony,” the developer replied.
Sophie looked around the building constructed for displaced families.
“Then why weren’t they invited?”
The room fell silent.
Laura ordered the guards to release him. The boy introduced himself as Miles Reed. His mother had lost their Bronx apartment after a landlord used tenant data purchased from a company once connected to Halcyon.
Miles opened the laptop.
On the screen was a list ranking families by how easily they could be displaced.
Beside one name was a red warning symbol.
