Chapter 13 - THE SCHOLARSHIP FOR SILENCEThe headmaster welcomed Laura and Sophie into an office overlooking Central Park.
He spoke gently, as though humiliating them required good manners.
The school would restore Sophie’s enrollment, cover her tuition, and guarantee admission to an elite high school.
There was only one condition.
Laura had to stop investigating Liberty Urban Renewal.
The headmaster called it a scholarship agreement. Laura called it a bribe.
A board member leaned toward Sophie.
“Girls from families like yours rarely receive opportunities like this.”
Sophie looked down at her worn shoes, then at the photographs of wealthy graduates covering the wall.
“Families like mine?”
“Families without influence.”
Sophie placed the unsigned agreement on his desk.
“My mother was locked in a basement because powerful men thought poor people could be frightened. You should know how that ended.”
The headmaster’s smile disappeared.
As they left, a custodian quietly slipped Laura a key.
It opened a storage room beneath the school auditorium.
Inside were boxes containing student records stamped with Liberty’s logo.
One file belonged to Miles.
