Chapter 3 - The Woman Below the KitchenThe bodyguards found a reinforced door behind the club’s wine-storage shelves.
Inside was Laura Carter, Sophie’s mother and a senior auditor at Hale Metropolitan Development. Her wrists bore light restraint marks, but she remained conscious and able to walk.
Paramedics examined both mother and daughter in a private lounge while police were called.
Laura refused to surrender the canvas document bag she held against her chest.
“Caldwell’s people wanted this,” she told Vincent.
The bag contained payment records linking Halcyon Civic Partners to shell companies that purchased condemned apartment buildings. Public funds were then used to renovate those properties, but most of the work never occurred.
Families were displaced. Inspectors were bribed. Empty buildings were resold for enormous profits.
Hale Metropolitan had financed several transactions.
Vincent said he had never approved fraudulent work.
Laura believed him.
“That is why I came to you.”
She had arranged to deliver the evidence during dinner, knowing Vincent and the city’s most influential financiers would be in one room.
Caldwell discovered her plan.
His men intercepted Laura and Sophie inside the club’s parking garage. Laura was confined below the kitchen while Caldwell continued eating upstairs.
“Why bring Sophie?” Vincent asked.
“My sitter canceled. I thought this was a safe building.”
Sophie held her mother’s hand.

Caldwell’s greatest protection had not been armed men or locked doors.
It had been the belief that nothing criminal could happen inside a room occupied by respected people.
