Laura’s voice broke.

“That is what powerful people always say.”
At the public hearing, Laura admitted everything before Rebecca could expose her selectively. She resigned from the tenant-evidence network and asked investigators to examine every decision she had made.
Some displaced families defended her.
Others demanded prosecution.
Mercer’s attorneys used the confession to argue that all evidence against Liberty had been illegally obtained.
The judge prepared to dismiss the case.
Then Miles’s mother entered carrying a grocery bag.
Inside was the missing laptop.
