Children praised in fundraising brochures were being sold as data behind closed doors.
At an emergency school-board meeting, parents in designer clothes demanded that Laura leave.
One father accused scholarship families of destroying the school’s reputation after receiving “more than they deserved.”
Miles’s mother stood in the back, still wearing her grocery-store uniform.
“My son earned his place.”
The father laughed.
“People like you always confuse being allowed inside with belonging.”
Sophie rose before Laura could stop her.
“Then maybe the problem isn’t that we entered your room. Maybe it’s what we found inside.”
The custodian presented copies of the records.
Board members immediately blamed him for stealing confidential property.
Police entered the auditorium.
They did not arrest the executives who had sold children’s information.
They handcuffed the custodian.
