Mercer was not Caldwell’s successor.
He was his employee.
Federal agents searched Liberty’s offices, yet the most important servers had already been emptied. Someone inside Hale Metropolitan had warned them.
Rebecca denied involvement.
Then Laura found her signature authorizing pension negotiations with a Caldwell-controlled trust.
Rebecca insisted she had acted to protect workers.
“You protected the company by selling the people it harmed,” Vincent replied.
She reminded him that he had once used the same excuse when he stopped reading compliance warnings.
The accusation struck because it was true.
Before agents could arrest her, Rebecca offered a bargain. She possessed a ledger identifying every judge, landlord, school, hospital, and public official who had purchased tenant scores.
She would surrender it only if Vincent guaranteed her immunity.
Laura refused.
Then Rebecca turned toward Sophie.
“Your mother’s name is in that ledger.”
