Chapter 6 - A Safe Haven

Back at the Hawthorne estate, Margaret had arranged for Emily to be moved from the staff quarters to a comfortable guest suite in the west wing.

A personal physician had examined the swelling on Emily’s cheek, prescribing an anti-inflammatory ointment and complete rest.

Emily sat by the wide window overlooking the manicured rose gardens, holding a cup of hot chamomile tea.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Daniel stepped inside carrying a small manila envelope.

"How are you feeling, Emily?" Daniel asked, pulling up a comfortable armchair across from her.

"The swelling is much better today, thank you, Mr.

Hawthorne.

You really didn't have to put me in the guest wing.

The other staff members might think—"

"The other staff members know you were wronged, and they respect you," Daniel interrupted gently.

"My family protects those who stand with us.

You showed tremendous courage by refusing to stay silent.

"

He set the envelope on the low table between them.

"This is a formal retainer agreement for legal representation.

I have hired Marcus Vance’s top rival firm to represent you in the civil assault suit against Vanessa Vance.

"

Emily looked at the documents, her eyes filling with fresh tears.

"Mr.

Hawthorne, I don't have the money to pay lawyers.

I send half of my wages home to my mother for her medical treatments.

"

"You won't pay a single cent," Daniel assured her, his voice unwavering.

"Every fee will be covered by the Hawthorne Foundation.

Vanessa will pay for the humiliation she caused you, down to the last penny.

"

Before Emily could respond, Daniel’s phone buzzed with an urgent text message from Sheriff Barnes.
