Chapter 11 - The Public Apology

Three days later, the Hawthorne estate held a formal press briefing in the grand ballroom where the gala had taken place.
Journalists from across the state filled the rows of chairs, their cameras pointed at the wooden podium.
Margaret Hawthorne stood at the microphone, flanked by Daniel and Emily, who wore a clean, professional dark blue suit.
"Good morning," Margaret began, her voice steady and commanding.
"Three nights ago, an innocent young woman was publicly struck and falsely accused of a crime in this very room.
Our society too often allows wealth and social prestige to dictate whose voices are believed and whose dignity is discarded.
"
She stepped aside, gesturing for Emily to take the podium.
Flashbulbs went off across the room, illuminating Emily’s face, where only a faint, fading shadow remained of the slap.
"My name is Emily Porter," she said clearly into the microphone.
"For months, I was told that my word would never matter against people of influence.
I was told that my silence could be bought or beaten out of me.
But the truth cannot be hidden behind expensive dresses or staged accusations.
I am here today because the truth was recorded, because justice was served, and because I refused to stay silent.

The room erupted into applause, the journalists standing to capture the image of the young woman who had brought down one of the most corrupt dynasties in the state.
Daniel watched her from the side, a proud, undeniable smile breaking across his face.
