By morning, state investigators had taken over the entire thirty-story headquarters of Vance Logistics in the financial district.
Dozens of agents carried boxes of encrypted hard drives and paper files out of the executive suites under the glare of national news cameras.
Thomas Vance had been arrested at a private airfield at 4:30 AM while attempting to board a chartered flight to the Cayman Islands.
In the conference room of the district attorney’s office, Emily sat beside Daniel and her appointed legal counsel, reviewing the original financial ledgers.
"Miss Porter, your original documentation from two years ago is completely verified," the lead federal investigator announced.
"The five million dollars diverted from Vance Logistics was used to bribe state port officials to secure municipal shipping monopolies.

"I tried to tell the board back then," Emily explained, looking at the detailed bank statements.
"They threatened to ruin my family's credit and ensure I could never find administrative work in this state again.
That’s why I took the housekeeping job with the Hawthornes.

Daniel placed a reassuring hand over hers on the table.
"You did the right thing, Emily.
Your evidence has uncovered the largest public corruption scheme in this county’s history.

The door to the conference room opened, and the county prosecutor stepped inside, carrying a formal plea agreement.
"Vanessa Vance has broken down under interrogation," the prosecutor stated.
"She admitted under oath that she personally planted the necklace, orchestrated the public confrontation at the gala, and authorized Gregory Cross to break into the Hawthorne estate.
