In Daniel’s executive office, a new brass nameplate sat on the desk in the corner office adjacent to his own.
The lettering read: *Emily Porter – Director of Corporate Compliance and Ethics.

Emily stood in the doorway, staring at the polished mahogany desk, the dual computer monitors, and the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the harbor.
"Mr.
Hawthorne, I don't know what to say," Emily said, her voice filled with awe.
"I don't have an executive degree.
"
"You have something far more valuable than a degree, Emily," Daniel said, walking over to hand her a set of office keys.
"You have absolute integrity.
You protected this company from fraud before you even had a contract here.
There is no one I trust more to oversee our ethical standards.
"
Margaret stepped into the office, carrying a beautiful bouquet of fresh white lilies.
"And your mother’s specialized medical care has been fully transferred to the Hawthorne Medical Research Center," Margaret added with a warm smile.
"She will receive the finest treatment available in the country, fully covered under our executive benefits.
"
Tears of profound relief filled Emily’s eyes as she hugged the older woman.
