Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Slap

The marble foyer of the Hawthorne estate was still ringing with the violent crack of Vanessa's hand against Emily's face.
The high-society guests, dressed in silks and bespoke suits for the annual autumn charity gala, stood frozen in shock.
On the large high-definition monitor mounted above the grand fireplace, the black-and-white security footage remained frozen on a single damning frame.
It showed Vanessa Vance, the polished heiress and prospective board member, glancing furtively around the private coatroom before sliding the diamond-encrusted heirloom into Emily’s leather satchel.
Daniel Hawthorne did not lower his arm.
His dark eyes bore directly into Vanessa, completely stripped of the polite warmth he usually offered during social engagements.
"You framed a member of my household staff in front of seventy witnesses, Vanessa," Daniel said, his deep voice carrying into every quiet corner of the hall.
Vanessa’s chest rose and fell beneath her tailored black gown.
Her lips parted, trembling slightly, but no defense came out.
The sharp red mark on Emily’s cheek had begun to swell into a visible welt, contrasting starkly with her plain housekeeping apron.
"I...
Daniel, this was a misunderstanding," Vanessa stammered, taking a small step backward.
"The camera angle is distorted.
I was simply checking if my necklace had fallen near her belongings.
"
"Distorted?" Daniel stepped closer, towering over her with rigid authority.
"The timestamp shows you entering the staff annex at 6:42 PM, eight minutes before you screamed that your jewelry was missing.
Emily was serving champagne in the conservatory under my mother's direct supervision.
"
Emily wiped a hot tear from her lower lash line, her breathing shaky as she looked down at her work shoes.
"Why did you do this to me, Miss Vance?" Emily asked, her voice cracking but steady enough to be heard.
Vanessa’s eyes flashed with a brief, venomous glare before she looked away, clutching her silk clutch against her ribs as if it were a shield.
"Call private security," Daniel instructed the head butler, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.

"No one leaves the foyer until the county sheriff takes formal statements.
