Chapter 9 - REBECCA’S CHOICE
Rebecca stands perfectly still inside the central nursery.
Crane’s arm is around her shoulders, but the syringe has not touched her skin.
Federal agents are less than ten minutes from the resort.
Crane knows he has only one path out.
He intends to exchange Rebecca for the research data and escape through the lodge’s helicopter tunnel.
Claire contacts Rebecca through the room’s emergency speaker.
“Look at me.”
Rebecca raises her eyes toward the camera.
“You are not alone.”
Crane smiles.
“She is eight years old, Claire. Do not ask her to be brave.”
Rebecca speaks before Claire can answer.
“I’m already brave.”
Crane’s expression changes.
Claire sees the fire-control remote mounted beside the nursery door.
Rebecca sees it too.
“Do not move,” Crane says.
Rebecca looks toward the bassinets containing the rescued babies.
“You said you saved children.”
“I did.”
“You scare them.”
“Sometimes fear is necessary.”
“That’s what bad people say.”
Crane tightens his grip.
Rebecca stamps hard on his foot and drops to the floor.
The syringe falls.
She rolls beneath a bassinet and presses the emergency remote.
Transparent infant-security walls rise around each crib.
The nursery doors lock.
Crane is trapped outside the protected bassinet area.
Rebecca crawls through the low service space beneath the cribs.
Nora’s voice comes through the speaker.
“Keep moving, Rebecca.”
Crane kicks at the barriers.
Claire watches, unable to breathe.
Rebecca reaches the opposite emergency panel.
Before she can press it, Crane grabs her ankle.
She screams.
Nora activates the bassinet-wheel system remotely.
Three empty bassinets roll between them, forcing Crane to release her.
Rebecca reaches the secure neonatal room and closes the door.
Federal agents enter the outer corridor.
Crane is arrested before he can escape.
Claire closes her eyes.
Her daughter saved herself.
Again.
But the danger at the lodge remains.
The maintenance cart reaches the final incline.
Nora manually pumps the rail lever while Claire holds Ethan and Anna fights to remain conscious.
They emerge inside the lower laboratory.
Michael runs toward Claire.
She raises one hand.
“Do not touch me.”
The words stop him.
Jonathan watches from beside the incubator.
“Family conflict is inefficient.”
Claire looks at Anna’s newborn.
“Release her.”
“I will after the treatment.”
“There will be no treatment without informed consent.”
“The child cannot consent.”
“Then her mother decides.”
Everyone looks at Anna.
Jonathan steps toward her.
“You will die without the new therapy.”
Anna’s voice is weak.
“Then treat me.”
“The newborn’s cells are more adaptable.”
“You do not touch my daughter.”
Jonathan’s composure cracks.
“I spent forty years trying to save you.”
“You spent forty years making me your laboratory.”
Olivia moves beside her sister.
Jonathan looks at both daughters.
“I lost your mother because science was too slow.”
“So you decided other mothers should lose their children,” Olivia says.
“I made progress.”
“You made prisoners.”
Marcus secures the laboratory exits.
Helena downloads Lily’s implant-removal records.
Nora transfers the original birth registry.
Jonathan still holds the only complete treatment protocol.
He lifts a small drive.
“If I destroy this, Lily’s implant cannot be safely removed. Anna’s condition remains fatal. The newborn may develop the same disease.”
Helena looks at Lily’s file.
Anna looks toward her daughter.
The temptation is real.
Jonathan has built a moral cage stronger than any locked door.
Claire studies the incubator.
The newborn’s medical monitor shows stable vital signs.
No procedure has begun.
“You want us to believe only you understand the treatment,” Claire says.
“Because it is true.”
“No. You want us dependent on you.”
She looks at Nora.
“Did Blackridge use independent researchers?”
“Several. Most were dismissed.”
“Are their names in the registry?”
“Yes.”
“Then the knowledge does not belong only to him.”
Jonathan grips the drive more tightly.
Claire continues.
“We copy every record, distribute it to ethical specialists and create a treatment without imprisoning anyone.”
“You will lose years.”
“Then we lose years.”
“Anna may not have years.”
Anna looks at her father.
“I would rather die as a person than live as your project.”
Jonathan’s face collapses.
For the first time, he appears not powerful but old.
Michael steps forward.
“You taught me that protecting family justified any lie.”
Jonathan looks at him.
“You were always weak.”
“No. I was afraid.”
Michael looks at Claire.
“And fear made me cruel.”
He removes his wedding ring and places it on the laboratory table.
“I will testify to everything.”
Claire does not respond.
The consequences of his choices will not disappear because he finally tells the truth.
Federal agents arrive at the lodge.
Jonathan is arrested.
The treatment drive is secured.
Anna’s baby is returned to her.
Helena receives the records needed to remove Lily’s implant.
Rebecca reaches the lodge with Olivia’s federal team and runs into Claire’s arms.
For a moment, the entire family stands together among the machines that nearly destroyed them.
Then Nora finds one final file.
It contains Ethan’s complete genetic sequence.
The sample was not taken after his birth.
It was created before his conception.
Claire looks at Michael.
“You said you thought Ethan was conceived naturally.”
Michael appears genuinely confused.
Nora opens the fertility records.
Claire’s stored embryo had been replaced during a routine medical procedure.
The paternal sample did not belong to Michael.
Claire feels the air leave her lungs.
“Who is Ethan’s biological father?”
Jonathan looks toward the screen.
Even in handcuffs, he smiles.
“The answer is inside the family.”
The file decrypts.
The paternal donor is listed as Samuel Crane.
Helena turns toward the doctor being brought into the lodge under guard.
Crane looks at Ethan.
“My son,” he whispers.
Michael moves toward him in rage.
Claire blocks him.
“No more decisions made by angry men.”
She looks down at Ethan.
Crane may have provided genetic material.
But he will never be the child’s father.
Then the laboratory system displays one final relationship match.
Samuel Crane is not merely Ethan’s biological donor.
He is Helena Ward’s missing brother.
Helena stares at him.
Crane smiles.
“Now you understand why Lily and Ethan were always meant to be connected.”
The file opens a hidden project title:
