Chapter 2 - TWO BRACELETS, ONE BABY

Emergency lights return in short red pulses.

Claire wheels herself toward the bassinet, ignoring the pain across her abdomen. Rebecca is already beside Ethan, pressing both hands against the blanket as though she can protect him from the entire room.

The monitor continues beeping.

Helena enters through the service door and closes it behind her.

“Do not touch the baby,” the fake nurse warns.

Helena looks at her with hatred.

“You lost the right to give orders eight years ago, Nora.”

Claire turns toward the woman trapped behind the glass partition.

“Nora?”

The fake nurse says nothing.

Helena removes a compact medical scanner from beneath her coat and approaches the bassinet.

Claire blocks her path with the wheelchair.

“You are not going near him until someone explains what is happening.”

Helena stops.

“He needs help. The bracelet is interfering with the monitor.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It is not an identification bracelet. It is a transmitter.”

Rebecca looks at the thin plastic band around Ethan’s ankle.

A tiny green light blinks beneath the printed name.

Claire had assumed it belonged to the resort’s infant-security system.

Helena holds up the duplicate bracelet.

“This one is real.”

Nora strikes the partition.

“She is lying.”

Helena does not look at her.

“The fake bracelet allows someone outside this wing to track the bassinet and unlock the neonatal elevators.”

Claire’s stomach tightens.

“Who put it on him?”

Nora folds her arms.

“Ask your husband.”

Rebecca looks at Claire.

“Dad would never hurt Ethan.”

Claire wants to agree immediately.

But the photograph in Michael’s locked drawer now feels like a door she should have opened years earlier.

The alarm continues.

Helena crouches several feet from the bassinet.

“The transmitter is disrupting the oxygen sensor. Remove it.”

Claire reaches toward Ethan’s ankle.

Nora screams.

“Don’t!”

Claire stops.

Helena turns toward the glass partition.

“Why?”

Nora’s face becomes tense.

“The bracelet has an anti-tamper circuit.”

“What happens if it is removed?” Claire asks.

“The wing lockdown ends.”

“That is what you want.”

“No. It also sends a signal to the person waiting outside.”

Helena studies the bracelet.

“How much time?”

Nora says nothing.

Claire raises the phone recording their conversation.

“You tried to take my son. You can either help me now or explain your silence to the police.”

Nora laughs bitterly.

“The police are part of this.”

Rebecca looks toward the hallway camera.

The green recording light has gone dark.

Helena confirms it.

“The live feed was cut when the power failed.”

Claire calls resort security.

No connection.

She tries Michael.

His phone goes directly to voicemail.

The storm shakes the glass corridor.

Snow covers the exterior doors faster than the emergency heaters can melt it.

They are isolated inside a locked maternity wing with two women who both claim to know the truth.

Ethan begins to cry.

The sound cuts through every argument.

Claire reaches across the bassinet and lifts him carefully against her chest. His breathing is steady. His skin is warm.

The monitor alarm slows as soon as his ankle moves away from the bassinet sensor.

Helena was right.

The bracelet is interfering with the equipment.

Rebecca touches her brother’s hand.

“He’s okay.”

“For now,” Nora says.

Claire looks at her.

“Why did you call him stupid?”

Nora glances toward Helena.

“I needed the person on the phone to believe I was following the plan.”

“You were pretending?”

“I was trying to reach the service door before they did.”

“You pushed his bassinet toward the exit.”

“Because the emergency shutters would trap us if the transmitter activated.”

Helena steps closer to the partition.

“You stole babies for Blackridge Maternity Center. Do not pretend you are protecting anyone.”

Nora’s face hardens.

“I followed orders. So did you.”

Helena’s eyes fill with anger.

“I was a patient.”

“You were also paid.”

Claire looks between them.

“Paid for what?”

Helena grips the duplicate bracelet.

Eight years earlier, she arrived at Blackridge Maternity Center during another winter storm. She had given birth to a daughter after a complicated pregnancy.

When she woke from surgery, staff told her the baby had died.

Helena was given a sealed coffin and pressured to leave before the weather worsened.

Weeks later, she discovered the coffin contained hospital blankets and sand.

She began investigating.

The medical file had been altered. The doctor disappeared. The nurse assigned to her room was Nora Vale—the woman now trapped behind the glass.

Helena followed financial transfers connecting Blackridge to wealthy couples seeking newborns without adoption records.

“What does this have to do with Rebecca?” Claire asks.

Helena looks at the girl.

“Your daughter was born at Blackridge the same night.”

Claire shakes her head.

“Rebecca was born in Nashville.”

“That is what Michael told you.”

Claire remembers the delivery poorly. She had suffered severe bleeding. Michael handled the forms while she remained unconscious.

When Claire woke, Rebecca was already wrapped in his arms.

She never questioned the hospital name printed on a temporary card later replaced by a normal birth certificate.

Helena removes an old photograph.

It shows Michael standing in a corridor beside Nora.

In his arms is a newborn wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.

A hospital clock behind him reads 2:18 a.m.

Rebecca’s recorded birth time.

“He bought my baby,” Helena says.

Rebecca begins crying.

Claire pulls her close.

“No.”

“I am not saying she is not your daughter.”

“You are saying I stole her.”

“I am saying your husband did.”

Nora lowers her head.

Claire looks at her.

“Is Helena telling the truth?”

Nora remains silent.

Helena reaches toward the control panel.

“Release her.”

Claire stares at her.

“She tried to take Ethan.”

“She knows how the system works. If someone is coming, we need her.”

Claire uses the remote to raise the partition halfway.

Nora crawls beneath it before Claire can change her mind.

She removes her fake badge and throws it onto the floor.

“My name is Nora Vale. I worked for Blackridge before it changed its name to Summit Haven Maternity Resort.”

Claire looks around the luxurious room.

This is the same institution.

New owners.

New branding.

The same mountain.

Nora opens the back of the transmitter bracelet using a pin from her uniform.

Inside is a tiny digital display.

Five minutes and twelve seconds remain.

“What happens when it reaches zero?” Rebecca asks.

Nora looks toward the service corridor.

“The neonatal elevator unlocks.”

“For whom?”

Nora meets Claire’s eyes.

“Michael.”

Claire feels something inside her collapse.

“My husband is coming to steal his own son?”

Nora shakes her head.

“Michael believes Ethan carries proof that could destroy everyone involved in the old baby exchange.”

“A newborn cannot carry proof.”

“Not the baby himself.”

Nora points toward the blood-collection sticker attached to Ethan’s blanket.

“His DNA.”

Claire’s phone vibrates.

A message has arrived from Michael.

I AM OUTSIDE THE MATERNITY WING. DO NOT TRUST THE WOMAN WITH THE SECOND BRACELET.

Claire looks toward Helena.

Then another message appears.

Helena Ward’s daughter died eight years ago.

The woman standing beside you is not Helena.
