Chapter 3 - THE HUSBAND IN THE STORM

Claire turns the phone so Rebecca cannot see the messages.

The girl has already endured enough.

Helena notices the change in Claire’s expression.

“What did he say?”

“That you are dead.”

Nora moves away from Helena.

The woman in the long coat remains perfectly still.

“Michael has spent eight years telling people I died.”

“He said Helena Ward’s daughter died, not Helena.”

Claire reads the message again.

The wording is deliberate.

Helena looks toward Rebecca.

“My daughter did not die.”

Nora studies her face.

“I remember Helena Ward. You look like her.”

“That does not prove who I am.”

“Then prove it,” Claire says.

Helena removes a folded legal document from her coat.

It is a court order authorizing DNA comparison between Helena Ward and Rebecca Bennett.

The document was issued that morning by a Tennessee judge.

Michael’s name appears as an interested party.

“He knew you were coming,” Claire says.

“He fought the order for six months.”

“Why was I never told?”

“Because he filed every response through a sealed family-court proceeding. He claimed disclosure would traumatize Rebecca.”

Nora looks at the transmitter.

Four minutes remain.

“We can argue about identities after we stop the elevator.”

Claire contacts Michael again.

This time, he answers.

Wind howls through the connection.

“Claire?”

“Where are you?”

“Outside the west entrance.”

“Why are you coming through the neonatal elevator?”

Silence.

“Who told you that?”

“Nora.”

“Nora Vale is a criminal.”

“She says you bought Rebecca.”

“Do not listen to either of them.”

“Did Rebecca come from Blackridge?”

Michael breathes heavily.

“Claire, open the maternity-wing door.”

“Answer me.”

“Ethan is in danger.”

“So is our marriage.”

“Not now.”

Claire’s voice becomes cold.

“Did you know Helena Ward?”

Michael does not answer.

Rebecca watches her mother.

Claire turns slightly away.

“Did you take another woman’s baby?”

“I saved Rebecca.”

“From what?”

“From Helena.”

The woman in the long coat steps closer.

Claire activates the speaker.

“Tell me what you saved her from.”

Michael hears Helena’s breathing.

His voice changes.

“You should not be alive.”

Rebecca gasps.

Helena closes her eyes.

Claire grips the phone.

“What did you do?”

Michael begins speaking rapidly.

Eight years earlier, he worked as a financial investigator for the state health department. He discovered Blackridge Maternity Center was arranging illegal newborn transfers.

Helena had agreed to surrender her baby to a wealthy couple in exchange for money.

On the night of the delivery, however, she changed her mind.

Blackridge administrators refused to cancel the arrangement.

Michael claimed he took the newborn before the transaction could happen.

“Why did you give her to me?” Claire asks.

“You had just lost our baby.”

The room falls silent.

Rebecca stares at her mother.

Claire cannot speak.

She remembers waking after emergency surgery.

Michael told her their daughter was healthy but had required treatment.

He never said another baby had died.

Helena whispers, “Your biological child did not survive.”

Claire looks toward Nora.

Nora nods.

“There were two deliveries that night. Helena’s daughter lived. Yours did not.”

Rebecca begins shaking.

Claire pulls her close.

“You are my daughter.”

“But not your real one.”

“You are real. You are mine.”

Helena’s voice cracks.

“She is mine too.”

Rebecca hides her face against Claire’s shoulder.

The timer reaches three minutes.

Michael speaks through the phone.

“Helena sold her. Do not let her pretend otherwise.”

“I was desperate,” Helena says. “My husband had died. I had no home. Blackridge promised the child would go to a loving family and that I could change my mind before birth.”

“You accepted the money.”

“I returned it.”

“You tried to take Rebecca from us when she was two.”

“Because I found you.”

Claire looks at Helena.

“You came to our house?”

“Michael met me before I reached the door.”

Michael’s voice becomes sharp.

“She threatened to expose everything unless I paid her.”

Helena reaches into her coat and removes a recording device.

She presses play.

Michael’s younger voice fills the room.

Take the money and disappear. Claire can never know her child died.

Claire closes her eyes.

There is no explanation large enough to contain the betrayal.

The timer reaches two minutes.

Nora opens the bracelet’s internal circuit.

“I can stop the elevator, but the infant-security system will identify Ethan as removed.”

“What does that mean?”

“Every exterior exit will unlock.”

Helena looks toward the service door.

“For Michael.”

“No,” Nora says. “For the transport team behind him.”

Michael hears her.

“Claire, listen carefully. There are men outside who want Ethan’s blood sample. I came to stop them.”

“Why does his DNA matter?”

“Because Rebecca and Ethan share a rare genetic marker.”

“They are not biologically related.”

“Exactly.”

Michael explains that Blackridge’s illegal operation was not limited to child trafficking. The center also used fertility patients in unapproved genetic trials.

Claire’s lost biological baby and Helena’s daughter had both been exposed to the same experimental treatment before birth.

Rebecca survived.

Claire’s biological daughter did not.

Now Ethan carries the same marker despite being conceived eight years later.

Someone used stored genetic material from Claire’s first pregnancy during Ethan’s fertility treatment without her knowledge.

“You told me Ethan was conceived naturally,” Claire says.

“I thought he was.”

“You handled the clinic records.”

“I did not know until yesterday.”

Nora closes the bracelet casing.

“One minute.”

A heavy impact sounds against the maternity-wing door.

Someone outside is trying to enter.

Michael shouts through the phone.

“That isn’t me.”

Another impact shakes the glass.

Rebecca points toward the shadow moving in the corridor.

Several figures stand beyond the emergency doors.

One carries a medical transport case.

Nora looks at Claire.

“When the timer reaches zero, every lock opens.”

“Can you stop it?”

“Yes. But Ethan’s monitor will transmit his DNA record to the main server.”

“Why is that dangerous?”

Helena answers.

“Because the server will identify which experiment created him.”

Michael whispers through the phone.

“And it will reveal who Claire’s first baby was given to.”

Claire feels the room turn cold.

“My daughter died.”

“No,” Michael says.

“I lied about that too.”

The timer reaches ten seconds.

Claire’s entire body stiffens.

Michael continues.

“Rebecca was Helena’s baby.”

“Nine.”

“But your biological daughter survived.”

“Eight.”

“She was transferred to another family.”

“Seven.”

“Who?” Claire demands.

May you like

Michael’s answer comes as the locks begin releasing.

“The fake nurse standing in front of you.”
