Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SERVICE DOOR

CHARACTERS:

Claire Bennett (34 years old): Wearing a light-colored patient gown, she sits in a wheelchair after giving birth. She is weak and in pain, but immediately becomes alert when her daughter warns her of danger.

Rebecca Bennett (8 years old): Wearing a dark hoodie, leggings, and sneakers. She is pale and frightened, but fiercely protective of her mother and younger brother.

Baby Ethan (newborn): Safely wrapped in a soft blanket, lying in a portable bassinet with a monitor next to Claire's chair.

Fake nurse (35-45 years old): Wearing a cream-colored medical uniform, gloves, and a fake employee ID. She is calm, cold, and confident that her plan will not be discovered.

The entire scene takes place at an isolated maternity resort on a snow-covered mountain at night. A storm has caused a power outage, leaving only dim red emergency lights illuminating the glass corridors and postpartum treatment rooms.

Rebecca suddenly rushes into the treatment room, locks the door, and pulls down the frosted glass curtains.

She runs to Claire, releases the wheelchair brake, and pushes her mother into a clean towel compartment behind a sliding wooden wall.

Ethan remains safe in his wheeled bassinet right beside them.

Shoes echo in the hallway.

Rebecca closes the sliding wall, leaving only a small gap for Claire to look out into the room.

“Mom, hide—that woman is coming!”

Claire is about to ask what is happening, but Rebecca puts a finger to her lips and points toward the door.

She says the woman in the medical uniform has been watching them from downstairs, using a fake card to open the neonatal unit door and asking the staff when Claire will be alone.

“That woman disguised as a nurse wants to kidnap Ethan!”

The doorknob slowly turns.

A woman in a cream-colored uniform enters using a key card. She does not check Claire but goes straight to Ethan’s bassinet, as if she knows exactly where the baby is.

She looks at the identification bracelet and gives a cold smile.

“It’s him—this stupid kid.”

Claire grips her wheelchair, ready to rush out.

Rebecca immediately grabs her mother’s hand, preventing her from making a sound as the woman turns toward the towel rack.

The fake nurse places her hand near the bassinet but does not touch Ethan. She takes out her phone and calls someone waiting in the transport area behind the resort.

“That woman is still hiding. That damn girl saw me.”

Rebecca begins to cry silently.

Claire pulls her daughter closer, secretly grabbing the emergency remote control attached to the wheelchair.

Outside, the fake nurse unlocks the bassinet wheels and pushes it toward the service door.

Ethan’s monitoring lights continue to flash steadily.

The woman glances at her watch and yells into the phone.

“Take the baby first—hurry, you useless thing!”

Claire immediately presses the alarm button.

The fireproof doors at both ends of the hallway slam shut simultaneously, locking the entire treatment area.

The fake nurse gasps in surprise.

The bassinet wheels automatically lock, preventing her from pushing Ethan any farther.

The emergency loudspeaker blares, announcing that all exits are blocked and security cameras are live-streaming to the guard room.

Rebecca pulls open the sliding wall.

Claire appears in her wheelchair, one arm cradling her daughter and the other holding a phone recording the entire call from the impostor.

The fake nurse turns pale but still tries to snatch the employee ID from her neck.

Just then, three knocks sound from behind the service door.

She turns her head to look through the small glass window.

In the dimly lit hallway, a person in a long coat stands motionless, holding a baby identification bracelet identical to Ethan’s.

The fake nurse’s eyes widen in horror as she realizes the person outside has not come to help her.

Claire tightens her grip on the phone.

“Who is that?”

The woman does not answer.

The person behind the service door raises the bracelet to the glass.

Under the emergency light, Claire can read the name printed across it.

ETHAN BENNETT.

She looks immediately toward the newborn sleeping in the bassinet.

His bracelet carries the same name, the same medical number and the same time of birth.

Rebecca presses against her mother.

“Why are there two?”

The fake nurse backs away from the door.

“You shouldn’t be here,” she whispers to the shadow outside.

The figure knocks three more times.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The fake nurse reaches beneath her cream-colored uniform and removes a second key card.

Claire raises her phone.

“Don’t move.”

The woman looks at her with sudden contempt.

“You think this alarm will save you?”

“It already recorded your voice.”

“The cameras will show a frightened mother attacking a nurse during a power failure.”

“You are not a nurse.”

The woman touches the badge hanging from her neck.

The photograph on it is hers, but the name has been scratched away.

Rebecca points toward the glass.

“The person outside knows you.”

The fake nurse’s confidence collapses for only a moment.

Then she lunges toward the emergency-control panel.

Claire activates the wheelchair’s second safety button.

A steel partition drops from the ceiling, separating the fake nurse from Ethan’s bassinet.

The woman strikes the glass with both hands.

“No!”

Rebecca runs to the bassinet and checks her brother.

Ethan remains calm beneath the blanket.

The mysterious person outside reaches toward the service-door lock.

The fake nurse pounds against the partition.

“Claire, do not open that door!”

Claire stares at her.

“You were trying to steal my son.”

“And that person will do something worse.”

The lock begins turning.

Claire wheels herself closer.

“Who is behind the door?”

The fake nurse looks from the identical bracelet to Ethan.

Her voice drops to a terrified whisper.

“The woman whose baby you brought home eight years ago.”

Rebecca stops breathing.

Claire looks down at her daughter.

“What did she say?”

The service door opens several inches.

A cold gust of wind enters the treatment room.

The figure removes her hood.

She is a pale woman in her late thirties with dark hair and hollow eyes.

Claire has never seen her before.

But Rebecca has.

The girl grips Claire’s sleeve.

“That’s the woman from the photograph in Dad’s locked drawer.”

Claire’s husband, Michael Bennett, is supposed to be traveling through the storm to reach the resort.

He never told Claire about another woman.

The stranger holds up the duplicate bracelet.

“My name is Helena Ward,” she says. “Eight years ago, this hospital gave me the wrong baby.”

Her eyes move toward Rebecca.

“And your husband knew.”

Before Claire can answer, every light in the maternity wing goes out.

In the darkness, Ethan’s monitor begins sounding an urgent alarm.

Then someone on the other side of the glass partition whispers:

“The child in that bassinet is not Ethan Bennett.”
