Chapter 7 - THE BABY INSIDE THE DECOY BASSINET

Claire looks down at Ethan in her arms.

He is safe.

Then whose baby was inside the rooftop bassinet?

Michael kneels beside Olivia on the helipad. The bullet struck her shoulder, but she remains conscious.

“The bassinet,” she gasps.

Michael looks toward the helicopter disappearing into the storm.

A crying sound had come from beneath the blankets after Jonathan pulled the bassinet into the aircraft.

Michael removes the hidden camera attached to the handle.

The recorded footage shows what happened before he carried it upstairs.

Nora prepared the decoy bassinet inside the neonatal storage room.

For several seconds, the camera view was blocked.

Then a tiny hand emerged from beneath the blanket.

Michael stares at the recording.

“Nora put a child inside.”

Downstairs, Claire turns toward Nora.

“What did you do?”

Nora looks terrified.

“I did not put anyone in that bassinet.”

“Then who did?”

Crane begins laughing again.

Everyone looks at him.

“You still believe Jonathan came for Ethan.”

“What did he take?” Claire asks.

Crane turns toward Rebecca.

“His granddaughter.”

Rebecca steps behind Claire.

“I’m here.”

“Not you.”

Crane looks toward Lily.

Helena tightens her hold on the girl.

“Lily is here too.”

Crane’s smile widens.

“Jonathan had another daughter.”

Olivia’s voice comes through the radio.

“No.”

Crane continues.

“Before Blackridge, Jonathan experimented on his own family. Olivia was not his only surviving child.”

Michael returns from the rooftop with Olivia supported against him.

Marcus follows after safely grounding the helicopter’s backup aircraft.

Olivia looks at Crane.

“My sister died at birth.”

“Your father told you that.”

The pattern repeats again.

Dead daughters.

Empty coffins.

Children moved under false names.

Claire almost laughs from exhaustion.

“Where was she?”

Crane points toward the hidden service shaft.

“Beneath the resort.”

Nora goes pale.

“There was one patient in the lower chamber. The staff called her Subject Zero.”

The women climbing from the shaft identify themselves as maternity patients brought to the mountain under false names.

One says a young woman had been held separately.

She gave birth two days earlier.

Her newborn was removed that morning.

“The decoy bassinet,” Michael says.

Jonathan took his own granddaughter.

Olivia looks shattered.

“My sister had a child?”

Crane nods.

“Your sister is forty-one years old. She has spent most of her life inside private medical facilities controlled by Jonathan.”

“Why?”

“Her genetic response to the Blackridge treatment was unstable. Jonathan considered her both his greatest failure and his most valuable subject.”

“What is her name?”

“Anna.”

Nora checks the lower chamber records.

The patient was admitted under the name Anna Grace.

Her newborn daughter was labeled A-117.

Jonathan’s one hundred seventeenth child subject.

Claire looks toward the women emerging from the shaft.

The resort is not merely a luxury maternity center.

It is a prison hidden beneath a hospital.

Nora and Marcus begin unlocking the sealed postpartum rooms.

Staff members who were not part of Crane’s network help move the newborns into a secure central ward.

Federal agents fight through the storm to reach the mountain.

The road remains blocked by fallen trees.

Olivia contacts the helicopter through an emergency aviation frequency.

Jonathan answers.

“You took Anna’s baby.”

“I rescued her from people who would expose her.”

“You imprisoned Anna.”

“I kept her alive.”

“You experimented on us.”

“I made you exceptional.”

Olivia closes her eyes.

Jonathan gives her coordinates.

“Come alone if you want the child.”

Michael takes the radio.

“She is not going anywhere.”

Jonathan’s voice remains calm.

“You have no authority over my daughter.”

“You told us she was dead.”

“She was easier to protect that way.”

Rebecca looks at Claire.

“Why do grown-ups keep saying that?”

Claire has no answer.

Jonathan ends the call.

The coordinates point to an abandoned research lodge five miles farther up the mountain.

The storm makes vehicle travel impossible.

Marcus says an old underground maintenance railway connects the resort to the lodge.

Crane refuses to reveal the access code.

Helena looks at Lily.

The girl is stable now that Jonathan deactivated the implanted port, but the device remains dangerous.

“We need the records stored at the lodge,” Olivia says. “They may contain the removal procedure.”

Helena faces her.

“Then we go.”

Claire looks down at Ethan.

She cannot leave him.

She also cannot allow Olivia and Michael to enter another trap alone.

Rebecca takes Claire’s hand.

“Mom, you stay with Ethan.”

“You stay too.”

Rebecca looks toward the locked service corridor.

“I can help show the police where the hidden rooms are.”

“You are eight.”

“I found Nora before any adult did.”

Claire cannot deny it.

But courage does not make Rebecca responsible for saving everyone.

“You have already done enough.”

Nora approaches.

“I will stay with Claire and the children.”

Claire gives her a cold look.

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No. I expect you to watch me.”

Michael, Olivia, Helena and Marcus prepare to use the underground railway.

Before leaving, Michael kneels before Rebecca.

“I need to tell you one thing.”

She waits.

“You are Claire’s biological daughter. But even when I believed you were Helena’s, I loved you from the moment I held you.”

“You still lied.”

“Yes.”

“Will you lie again?”

Michael looks toward Claire.

“I will try not to.”

Rebecca shakes her head.

“That isn’t a promise.”

Michael absorbs the lesson.

“I promise.”

They leave.

Claire supervises the rescue of the hidden mothers and babies.

Nora removes the transmitter bracelet from Ethan after disabling its signal.

Inside the bracelet is a microscopic storage chip.

Claire inserts it into her phone.

The chip contains a video recorded before Ethan’s birth.

Michael appears inside the resort laboratory, speaking with Jonathan.

“I will bring Claire here,” Michael says. “But you leave Rebecca out of it.”

Jonathan replies, “And the newborn?”

Michael looks toward a file carrying Ethan’s name.

“If he carries the marker, you can take the sample.”

Claire feels the room collapse around her.

Michael did not arrive at Summit Haven by accident.

He brought his pregnant wife into Jonathan’s facility deliberately.

Nora watches the video.

“He made a deal.”

Claire’s phone rings from the underground railway.

Michael is calling.

Before she answers, the service-shaft lights activate.

A woman climbs from the darkness.

She is weak, barefoot and wearing a patient gown.

Olivia’s missing sister, Anna, has reached the treatment room.

She looks at Ethan.

Then she looks at Claire.

“Michael promised my father your baby,” Anna says.

“And in exchange, Jonathan promised to give Rebecca back to Helena.”
