Chapter 5 - THE SISTER WHO NEVER DIED
Michael stops struggling.
Olivia Bennett stands beyond the glass corridor with Lily beside her. Snow gathers across the shoulders of her white coat.
Claire has seen Olivia only in framed photographs.
Michael claimed his sister died in a car accident nine years earlier.
He described her as brilliant, impulsive and impossible to save from herself.
Now she stands alive on the mountain, holding Helena’s daughter.
Claire looks at her husband.
“How many dead people are still alive?”
Michael says nothing.
Olivia guides Lily into the corridor.
The girl studies Helena with cautious curiosity.
Helena moves forward slowly.
“Lily?”
The child looks toward Olivia before answering.
“That’s my name.”
“I’m Helena.”
“I know.”
Helena’s eyes fill with tears.
“Do you know who I am?”
Lily nods once.
“My first mother.”
The words nearly break Helena.
Olivia places one hand on the girl’s shoulder.
“She has known the truth for two years.”
“You kept her from me,” Helena says.
“I kept her alive.”
Nora laughs bitterly.
“That is what all of us say.”
Crane remains restrained near the wall.
He looks toward Olivia.
“You should have stayed hidden.”
“You should have stayed dead.”
Olivia tells Marcus to contact the state police using a satellite terminal in the transport vehicle.
Marcus hesitates.
Claire notices.
“You work for Crane.”
Marcus looks toward the locked corridor.
“I work for whoever keeps this resort open.”
Olivia removes a badge from her coat.
It identifies her as a federal medical-fraud investigator.
Marcus’s confidence disappears.
“Every camera in this wing has been recording to an external server,” Olivia says. “The storm never interrupted the transmission.”
Crane looks at Nora.
“You said the live feed was cut.”
“It was cut from your control room,” Nora replies. “Not from mine.”
Nora was not simply a fake nurse.
She had entered the resort as part of Olivia’s operation.
Claire remembers the cruel words, the staged phone call and the attempt to push Ethan toward the service door.
“You frightened Rebecca on purpose.”
Nora looks ashamed.
“I needed Crane’s team to believe I was following their plan.”
“You called my son stupid.”
“The call was being monitored.”
“You could have warned me.”
“We did not know whether Michael had told you everything.”
Claire looks at her husband.
“He had not.”
Olivia faces Michael.
“You were supposed to confess before Ethan was born.”
“I was trying to protect Claire’s recovery.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
Rebecca stands near the towel compartment holding the opened transport case.
“Dad, why did you lie about Aunt Olivia?”
Michael kneels several feet from her.
“Because people were hunting her.”
“Why did you say she died?”
“The only way to hide her identity was to make everyone believe there was nothing left to find.”
Rebecca looks toward Lily.
“And her?”
Michael cannot answer.
Olivia does.
“Eight years ago, Michael discovered Blackridge’s newborn-transfer operation. He entered the nursery to rescue Helena’s daughter. The bracelets had already been switched. He took Claire’s biological baby by mistake.”
“Rebecca,” Claire says softly.
Olivia nods.
“Michael brought Rebecca to Claire because he believed she was Helena’s child and because Claire’s own daughter had supposedly died.”
“But I survived,” Rebecca whispers.
“You both survived,” Olivia says. “The second baby was transferred before Michael returned.”
Helena looks at Lily.
“Crane took her.”
“Crane registered himself as her father to prevent any legal inquiry,” Olivia explains. “Then he moved her through private medical facilities.”
“Why?” Claire asks.
“Because Lily and Rebecca were the first two infants to survive Blackridge’s prenatal genetic trial.”
Michael stands.
“What trial?”
Olivia turns toward him.
“You still don’t know?”
Crane begins laughing.
“You thought you were the hero who interrupted a trafficking ring.”
“What did you do to them?” Michael demands.
Crane smiles.
“Their mothers entered a fertility-support program using a new placental treatment. The treatment modified gene expression linked to immune resistance.”
“You experimented on unborn children,” Claire says.
“We prevented disease.”
“Without consent.”
“Consent slows progress.”
Helena moves as though she might strike him, but Lily grabs her hand.
The child’s touch stops her.
Olivia opens the original medical records.
Rebecca and Lily share a rare cellular marker created by the Blackridge treatment.
Ethan carries the same marker naturally because Claire passed altered genetic material to him.
“The changes became heritable,” Olivia says.
Claire looks at Ethan.
“What does that mean for him?”
“We do not know.”
Crane answers instead.
“It means he is the first male child carrying the stable trait.”
Everyone turns toward him.
“That is why you came for him,” Michael says.
“His blood could make the research worth billions.”
Claire holds Ethan more tightly.
“You will never touch him.”
Crane looks unconcerned.
“I do not need to.”
He glances toward the bassinet monitor.
A small blood-collection cartridge is attached beneath it.
The resort already took Ethan’s sample.
Nora removes the cartridge.
It is empty.
Crane smiles.
“The sample left the mountain before the storm began.”
Olivia immediately calls her team.
Crane continues.
“The courier was instructed to deliver it to the Bennett Biomedical Foundation.”
Claire turns toward Michael.
“That is your company.”
Michael’s face becomes pale.
“I sold the foundation three years ago.”
“To whom?” Olivia asks.
Michael looks at Crane.
Crane says the name for him.
“Dr. Jonathan Bennett.”
Claire freezes.
Jonathan Bennett is Michael and Olivia’s father.
He has visited Claire every Sunday for twelve years.
He held Rebecca after she was born.
He arranged Claire’s fertility treatment before Ethan’s conception.
And according to Michael, Jonathan knew nothing about Blackridge.
Olivia shakes her head.
“Our father founded it.”
The storm lights flicker again.
A helicopter appears beyond the corridor windows.
It lands on the resort’s emergency pad.
Michael’s phone rings.
Jonathan Bennett’s name appears on the screen.
Michael answers.
His father’s voice is calm.
“Bring Ethan to the roof.”
“No.”
“Then ask Olivia what will happen to Lily if I release her medical trigger.”
Olivia’s face changes.
Helena looks at her.
“What trigger?”
Olivia does not answer.
Lily suddenly grabs her chest.
A monitor hidden beneath her coat begins flashing red.
The girl collapses into Helena’s arms.
Jonathan’s voice continues through the phone.
“You saved the wrong child eight years ago, Michael.”

The rooftop door unlocks by itself.
“Do not make the same mistake twice.”
