Chapter 8: The Threat at the Gates

Before Arthur could summon Marcus, Thomas entered the library with a look of deep concern. He held a silver tray, upon which sat a sealed legal envelope. The return address was that of a notorious high-profile law firm in New York City, known for their aggressive, borderline illegal tactics on behalf of wealthy, desperate clients.

"This was just delivered by courier, sir," Thomas said, his voice hushed. "The messenger insisted it be placed directly in your hands."

Arthur ripped the envelope open, his eyes scanning the complex legal jargon quickly. As he read, his jaw clenched, and the veins in his temple began to throb with intense anger. It was a formal petition for emergency guardianship over Clara, alleging that she was suffering from severe prepartum psychosis and hallucinatory grief, making her a danger to herself and her unborn child. The petition maliciously cited Clara’s "irrational, frantic behavior" on the staircase three nights ago as primary evidence of her unstable mental state.

"They are moving faster than I anticipated," Arthur muttered, crumbling the legal document in his hand. "Eleanor is trying to have Clara committed to a psychiatric facility before the child is born. Once she is declared incompetent, Eleanor will step in as the legal guardian of the baby, seizing control of Julian’s share of the estate."

"That is monstrous, sir," Thomas said, his face pale with shock. "How can she do such a thing to her own family?"

"Eleanor does not view us as family, Thomas. She views us as obstacles to her greed," Arthur said coldly. He walked to his desk and picked up his private phone, dialing his personal attorney and lifelong friend, Harold Sterling. "Harold, I need you at the manor immediately. Eleanor has filed a malicious petition for emergency guardianship over Clara. I want a massive countersuit filed within the hour, alleging corporate embezzlement and conspiracy to commit murder. Use the preliminary financial records Julian left, and prepare an immediate, airtight restraining order against Eleanor and Marcus."

Arthur knew that the courts could be slow, but a public allegation of this magnitude would destroy the Vance Group's stock if it leaked. Eleanor was playing a dangerous game of chicken, betting that Arthur would rather pay her off than drag the family name through the mud. She had underestimated his complete disregard for wealth when compared to his loyalty to his blood.

He hung up the phone, his gaze turning to the window. The rain had begun to fall, a steady drizzle that streaked the glass. The legal battle had officially begun, but Arthur had no intention of fighting this solely in a courtroom. He would break their spirits before they ever stepped foot in front of a judge.
