Chapter 11: Under Lock and Key

With Marcus’s signed confession safely locked inside his personal wall safe, Arthur took immediate, decisive steps to secure Vance Manor. He had the electronic locks on the west wing changed, effectively keeping Eleanor confined to her luxurious quarters. Two professional, armed security guards patrolled the hallway outside her mahogany door, ensuring she had absolutely no contact with the outside world, her high-priced lawyers, or her terrified son. Marcus was kept in a separate, secure guest room in the main house, under constant watch, waiting for the formal arrival of the federal authorities.

Eleanor paced her lavish bedroom, her dark red sequin gown now looking wrinkled and absurd in the cold morning light. She had tried multiple times to call her corporate lawyers, but the landlines in her wing had been physically cut, and her personal cell phone had been forcefully confiscated by Arthur's elite security team. She felt like a caged animal, her grand, expensive ambitions crumbling rapidly around her as the walls closed in.

"Arthur!" she screamed, pounding on the heavy oak door. "You can't do this to me! I am a Vance! You have no right to hold me prisoner!"

The guard outside remained completely silent, his tall shadow blocking the sliver of light beneath the door. Eleanor sank slowly onto her velvet bed, her face buried in her trembling hands. For the first time in her long life, she felt a cold, paralyzing dread creeping into her heart. She had always falsely believed she was smarter than Arthur, that she could easily outmaneuver his traditional, old-fashioned ideas of family honor and duty. But she had forgotten that Arthur’s quiet ruthlessness, when fully provoked, was a devastating force of nature.

Downstairs, Arthur sat with Clara in the morning room. The sun was trying to break through the clouds, casting pale beams of light across the table. Clara looked much better, the color returning to her cheeks, though her expression was serious as she listened to Arthur's report.

"The state police will be here tomorrow morning at dawn," Arthur explained, taking a quiet sip of his hot black coffee. "Harold has coordinated directly with the district attorney's office. With Marcus’s detailed confession and the paper trail of financial records, they have more than enough evidence to arrest Eleanor for grand embezzlement, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder. The state police highway patrol is already reopening the formal investigation into Julian’s fatal accident."

Clara placed her hand over Arthur’s. "Thank you, Arthur. For everything. I don't know what would have happened to us if you hadn't been here."

"You are my family, Clara," Arthur said, his voice quiet but resolute. "And this is what we do. We protect our own. The nightmare is almost over."

Clara looked down at her belly, feeling a soft kick from within. It was a reminder of why they had to fight so hard, and why she had to remain strong. The child deserved to grow up in a home free of the toxic greed that had claimed his father's life.
