Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm

Arthur sat at his large mahogany desk, staring intensely at the handwritten letter Clara had found. His gold-rimmed reading glasses rested on his nose, but his eyes were fixed on his late son’s familiar handwriting. Beside him, Clara stood silently, her white lace dress a stark, haunting contrast to the dark, masculine decor of the library. Arthur’s face was utterly unreadable, a mask of carved stone, but his hands were trembling slightly as he folded the heavy paper and placed it gently on the desk.
"He was trying to protect me," Arthur said, his voice cracked with a rare show of emotion. "He wanted to save me the pain of knowing my own family was stealing from us. And it cost him his life."
"We have to stop them, Arthur," Clara said, her voice filled with a quiet strength. "Not just for the inheritance, but for Julian. They took him from us, and they tried to take my baby too."
Arthur stood up, removing his glasses and placing them next to the letter. He walked to the tall arched window, looking out over the rolling lawns of the estate. The autumn sky was overcast, heavy grey clouds threatening a cold rain. "Marcus is the weak link in their chain," Arthur murmured, his eyes reflecting the dark clouds. "He has always been desperate for his mother's approval, but he lacks her cold stomach for outright violence. If he was involved in Julian’s tragic accident, he will break under the slightest pressure."
"How do we reach him?" Clara asked. "Eleanor has him isolated in the west wing."
"I will summon him to the study," Arthur said, his voice hardening. "I will tell him we are discussing the restructuring of the family trust. He won't be able to resist the opportunity to secure his position. Once he is away from Eleanor's watchful eyes, I will show him what happens when you betray this family."
Arthur turned to Clara, his stern, weathered features softening slightly as he looked at her tired but determined face. He walked over and placed a reassuring, heavy hand on her shoulder. "You have done incredibly well, Clara. Julian would be so proud of your courage. But I want you to promise me you will stay in your room with the guards while I deal with Marcus. This is going to get ugly, and you and the baby must not be exposed to the toxicity."

"I promise," Clara said, looking down at her stomach before meeting his gaze again. "Just make them pay, Arthur. Make them pay for Julian's stolen life."
"They will," Arthur promised solemnly. "I will strip them of everything they hold dear."
