Chapter 2: Sanctuary in the East Wing

The study in the east wing was Arthur's private sanctuary, a room lined with leather-bound books and heavy mahogany furniture. He laid Clara gently on the plush velvet sofa, wrapping a warm woolen blanket around her shoulders. Her white lace dress was slightly creased, and her hands still trembled as she clutched the fabric. Arthur knelt beside her, his dark blue suit jacket now creased, but his focus remained entirely on her. He took her cold hands in his own, rubbing them to bring back the warmth.
"You are safe here, Clara," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a soothing, resonant rumble. "No one enters this wing without my permission. Tell me exactly what happened up there."
Clara swallowed hard, her eyes darting to the locked door before settling on Arthur's stern but comforting face. "I was in the nursery," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Eleanor came in. She had that red dress—it was Julian’s mother’s dress, the one she wore to their wedding. Eleanor was holding shears. She told me I didn't belong here. She said I was just a middle-class girl trying to steal their legacy. She said she would ensure my baby never inherited a single cent of the Vance estate. When I tried to take the dress from her, she shoved me toward the stairs. I tripped, but I managed to grab the banister. The dress tore, and I ran."
Arthur's jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his cheek twitched. The red silk dress that had fallen down the stairs was indeed a cherished heirloom of his late wife, a symbol of the family's legacy. For Eleanor to use it as a weapon of intimidation was a direct declaration of war.
"She has crossed a line from which there is no return," Arthur murmured, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light. "She thinks because Julian is gone, she can intimidate you into leaving. She wants the inheritance for her son, Marcus. Marcus is a weak man, easily controlled by his mother's ambitions. But she forgets that I am still the head of this house."
"I’m so scared, Arthur," Clara said, a single tear escaping her eye and rolling down her cheek. "She looked at me with so much hatred. I felt like she wanted us both gone."
"I will protect you both," Arthur promised, his voice thick with unyielding resolve. "Julian trusted me to look after you, and I intend to keep that promise with my life."

A soft knock at the door interrupted them. Arthur stood up, adjusting his suit jacket, his protective posture returning. "That will be the doctor. Rest now, Clara. The storm is coming, but you are behind my walls."
He walked to the heavy oak door and unlocked it, stepping out into the hallway to meet Dr. Evans, leaving Clara to find whatever peace she could in the quiet, firelit room.
