Chapter 1: The Descent of Shadows

The crystal chandelier hummed with a quiet elegance, casting fractured patterns of gold and silver across the white marble foyer of Vance Manor. The silence of the grand estate was shattered by the frantic scuffle of bare feet. Clara ran down the grand white staircase, her white lace long-sleeved dress billowing behind her like a tattered shroud of innocence. Tears streamed down her pale face as she clutched her seven-month pregnant belly. A red silk dress, ripped and discarded, tumbled down the steps behind her, a grim testament to the struggle that had just occurred on the upper landing.

"My baby!" Clara cried, her voice trembling with sheer terror.

At the bottom of the stairs, Arthur Vance stepped into the light. His distinguished grey hair caught the glow of the chandelier, and his dark blue suit was perfectly pressed, though his posture was rigid with sudden alarm. Seeing Clara stumble, he lunged forward, catching her in his arms before she could fall onto the unforgiving marble.

Arthur knelt, cradling her trembling form. "Please protect my baby," Clara whispered, her fingers digging into the fabric of his dark blue jacket as she gasped for breath.

Arthur held her close, his protective instincts overriding his usual stoic demeanor. His chest rose and fell with a heavy, deliberate breath as he looked past her, his gaze climbing the white steps. His expression hardened into a cold, menacing mask of anger.

On the mid-landing stood Eleanor Vance. Dressed in a dark red sequin gown that shimmered like fresh blood under the crystal light, she stared down at them. Her blonde hair was slightly disheveled, her hand resting on the polished banister. Her face was pale, her lips parted in a breathless, shocked expression of horror as she realized she had been caught.

Arthur glared upward, his eyes boring into Eleanor with intense fury. "You've chosen the wrong family," he delivered, his voice a low, terrifying growl that echoed through the vast hallway.

For a moment, the three of them remained frozen. Eleanor clutched her throat, her chest heaving beneath the red sequins. She took a step backward, her eyes darting toward the shadows of the upper corridor. But Arthur did not give her the chance to escape. Gently, he lifted Clara, keeping his eyes locked on Eleanor. He could feel the rapid heartbeat of his late son's child beating against Clara's ribs. This child was the last piece of Julian he had left, and he would burn his own empire to the ground before he let Eleanor touch them again.

"Call Dr. Evans," Arthur commanded his butler, who had just rushed into the foyer. "Now."

Arthur carried Clara toward the east wing, his steps measured and strong, leaving Eleanor standing entirely alone on the stairs, a solitary, trembling figure draped in guilty crimson under the glittering chandelier.
