Chapter 4 - The Public Exposure

In the world of high society and corporate finance, reputation is everything. Daniel and Vanessa had spent years meticulously crafting theirs.

Vanessa’s brand, V. Miller Designs, relied heavily on her image as a stylish, grieving "single mother fighting for her brave daughter." She routinely used photos of Sofia in hospital gowns to raise funds on social media, launching "charity galas" where 90% of the proceeds vanished into corporate administrative fees.

Daniel was up for a senior partner promotion at his firm, Vanguard Capital, relying on his image as a stable, family-oriented leader.

On Thursday morning, I made sure both of those carefully constructed facades crumbled into dust.

I didn't leak anything to tabloid gossip columns. Instead, I delivered a 112-page certified forensic audit report directly to the Chief Compliance Officer and Senior Partners of Vanguard Capital, alongside the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Children’s Medical Foundation.

By 11:00 AM, the fallout began.

I was sitting in a quiet coffee shop across from Vanguard Capital’s headquarters when I saw Daniel hurry out of the glass revolving doors, flanked by two corporate security guards. He was carrying a cardboard box containing his desk items.

His corporate phone had been disconnected. His company car had been repossessed from the subterranean garage. His equity shares had been frozen pending an internal audit.

Less than twenty minutes later, my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered it calmly.

“You evil, vengeful bitch!” Daniel screamed into the receiver, his voice erratic and slurred. “They fired me! They marched me out of the building in front of everyone! They revoked my trading license! Do you have any idea what you’ve done to my career?!”

“You did this to your career, Daniel,” I replied, taking a sip of my tea. “You committed grand larceny and fraud while using your firm’s servers to execute the illegal wire transfers. You brought federal law enforcement to their front door. What did you expect them to do? Give you a bonus?”

“Vanessa is having a nervous breakdown!” he yelled. “Her investors are pulling out! Sponsors are canceling her brand contracts! She’s losing everything!”

“She lost her daughter three days ago, Daniel, and she didn't shed a single real tear,” I said, my tone turning to ice. “Losing a clothing line seems like a very mild trade-off.”

“We will destroy you in court, Emma!” Daniel threatened, panting heavily. “I will fight you for every single penny of your estate! You think you’re so smart with your spreadsheets? I know things about your private life that will ruin you!”

“I look forward to discovery, Daniel,” I said softly. “Make sure your lawyer brings a very large notepad.”

I cut the call and blocked the number.
