Chapter 16 - A CRACK IN THE ARMOR

Two weeks later, an urgent message came from the prison where Daniel was serving his fifteen-year sentence. Daniel was breaking down. Terrified of being implicated in Vanessa's new conspiracy charges, he begged for a meeting with Emma.

Emma walked down the long, cold hallway of the visitation center. Sitting behind the glass, Daniel looked forty years older—his hair graying, his skin pale, his posture defeated.

"Emma... please," Daniel wept, putting his trembling hands against the glass. "Vanessa ruined me. She made me turn on you... on Sofia. I'll give you everything. Every account code, every name of her accomplices. Just ask the prosecutor to move me to a minimum-security facility."

Emma looked at the man she had once loved, feeling neither hate nor pity—only a profound, quiet stillness.

"You ruined yourself, Daniel," Emma said softly. "I will accept your evidence. But your redemption won't come from a lighter sentence. It will come when you finally accept the consequences of your choices."
