Vanessa received an additional twenty years without the possibility of parole for conspiracy, wire fraud, and witness tampering. She would spend the rest of her youth and middle age inside a maximum-security federal facility. Daniel’s petitions were denied, cementing his long sentence.
Outside the courthouse, the sun broke through heavy grey clouds, bathing the stone steps in warm, golden light.
