Chapter 11 - WHISPERS FROM THE DARK

The sunset over White Plains brought a brief moment of quiet, but peace, Emma soon learned, was a fragile thin glass easily shattered by those with nothing left to lose. Three weeks after the grand opening of the Sofia Miller Foundation, a certified letter arrived at Emma’s doorstep. It bore the seal of the New York State Court of Appeals.

Vanessa had hired Julian Vance—a ruthless, silver-tongued defense attorney known for pulling wealthy criminals out of inescapable convictions on technicalities. Vance had filed an emergency petition alleging chain-of-custody violations regarding the financial receipts that had convicted Vanessa and Daniel.

"They're trying to freeze the foundation's assets," Helen said, her voice shaking as she set down her teacup in Emma’s sunlit kitchen. Her hands trembled—a physical mark of the guilt she carried daily. "Vanessa knows if she stalls the foundation, she drains your legal defense fund."

"Let her try," Emma said softly, setting down the wooden hummingbird pin she always kept near her desk. "She thinks this was about money. She still doesn't understand that Sofia is the one guiding this."

Late that night, Emma received an untraceable phone call. A rasping, cold voice whispered into the line: “ You built a castle on our bones, Emma. But bones break easily.”

The war was far from over.
