Chapter 8: Threads of Connection

Over the following weeks, Mateo restructured his life. He scaled back his travel commitments and opened a modest consulting practice in the city, allowing him to stay local. He didn't force his presence on Lucia, but he made sure she knew he was available.

He paid off the remaining balance of her prenatal care at the clinic, ensuring she had access to the best doctor in town. When Lucia attempted to repay him, he simply said, "It's for our child, Lucia. Let me be a father."

One Saturday afternoon, Mateo helped Lucia carry groceries up the three flights of stairs to her apartment. The space was small but impeccably clean, decorated with warm colors and hand-made baby quilts.
