Chapter 14: The Arrival

Two days later, Mateo brought Lucia and baby Elena home to the quiet house near the park. He had prepared the kitchen with fresh groceries and set up a comfortable nursing chair in the living room.
Clara, Lucia's former supervisor from the hotel, came by that evening bringing a casserole and a warm baby blanket she had knitted herself.

"He's been a good man to you these past few months, Lucia," Clara remarked quietly while Mateo was in the kitchen preparing tea.
Lucia looked across the room at Mateo, who was gently rocking Elena's bassinet. "He changed," Lucia said simply. "He stopped running and started showing up."
