Chapter 6 - The Airport Memory

As night bled into the early hours of Monday morning, Cassidy sat in the grand master study of her residence, looking at an old framed photograph.
It was taken four years ago at an international airport in Zurich.
In the photo, a younger Cassidy stood surrounded by federal agents and her family’s private legal team. She remembered that day vividly—the day her peaceful vacation with her cousins was abruptly cut short by a mysterious text message: “Fly home now. Don’t tell your parents.”
When she had landed, she was rushed into a private lounge where Arthur and federal investigators waited. That was the day she learned her biological father, Edward Sterling, was not a simple retired accountant as her mother had led her to believe, but the secret majority architect of one of the world’s largest private investment conglomerates.
That was also the day she learned Edward had passed away, leaving her sole heiress to a fortune so vast it had drawn the eyes of dangerous corporate predators. To protect her until she reached full legal maturity at twenty-five, the estate had ordered her into complete deep-cover anonymity.
She had met Brendan shortly after that revelation. In her vulnerability and grief, she had fallen for his charming facade, praying that he was the anchor she needed in a world suddenly filled with deceit.
A soft knock on the study door broke her reverie.
Arthur walked in, holding a tablet. “Ms. Sterling, the morning news broadcasts are beginning. The press is going wild over the press release.”
Cassidy turned on the large wall-mounted monitor.
A sharp news anchor appeared on screen: “Breaking News in the corporate world: Vanguard Legacy Holdings has officially announced the immediate removal of the entire executive board of Vance Enterprises. In a shocking revelation, twenty-five-year-old Cassidy Sterling has stepped forward as the majority shareholder and new CEO, ousting her former husband, Brendan Vance, amid massive fraud investigations...”
Cassidy watched as images of Brendan being turned away from the corporate headquarters by armed guards flashed across the screen. He looked disheveled, frantic, and completely ruined.
“Has he tried to contact the office?” Cassidy asked quietly.
“Dozens of times,” Arthur replied. “He is currently waiting in the lobby downstairs, begging for five minutes with you. Security is preparing to remove him.”
Cassidy stood up, adjusting her crisp white blazer. “No. Don't remove him yet. Let him up.”

Arthur raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure, Ma'am?”
“I want him to see the room he was never worthy to enter,” Cassidy said firmly.
