Chapter 11 - Shadows Over the Sun

The laughter of little Hope was the sweetest melody Cassidy had ever known. It echoed across the manicured lawns of the Sterling Estate. For two years, this sanctuary had been Cassidy’s haven—a fortress built on the ashes of her old life.

She sat on the blanket, watching Hope chase a yellow butterfly. Everything Cassidy had built—the revived Sterling Enterprise, the sprawling estate, the international tech contracts—had been forged through pure grit. She was no longer a victim. She was a queen.

"Cassidy."

The voice broke the morning tranquility like a shattered mirror. Cassidy stood up, placing herself instinctively between her daughter and the intruder.

Standing at the edge of the rose garden was Vance Sterling, her ex-husband, accompanied by a ruthless corporate attorney, Richard Hayes.

"What are you doing on my property, Vance?" Cassidy’s voice was icy steel.

"Is this how you welcome your former husband?" Vance smirked, eyeing little Hope. "We've filed a petition to contest the original divorce settlement and initiate an emergency custody claim for Hope. You lied about the company’s valuation, Cassidy. And a mother working sixteen-hour days running an empire is mentally unstable and emotionally absent."

The audacity was breathtaking. Vance had squandered his fortune and now returned like a vulture.

"Listen to me very carefully, Vance," Cassidy whispered, her tone carrying a quiet, lethal calm. "You didn't build this estate. You didn't save Sterling Enterprise—I did. Try to touch my daughter, and I will dismantle whatever is left of your miserable life piece by piece."

Four armed guards stepped out from the perimeter. Vance flushed with rage as he was forcibly escorted out, screaming threats through the closing iron gates.

Cassidy pulled Hope tightly into her arms. The peace was broken. The war had begun.
