Chapter 8 - A New FoundationA year later, the Sterling estate had been liquidated and converted into the Evelyn Carter Community Center, funded by a trust managed by Lucas's law firm.
It was a bright spring afternoon. The gardens where Chloe once planned her extravagant wedding were now filled with flower beds, children playing, and families gathering for community meals.
Chloe, dressed in simple clothing with her hair tied back, was tending to the rose bushes near the pool—which had been turned into a peaceful koi pond.
Footsteps approached on the stone path. Chloe turned to see Lucas walking toward her, holding two cups of coffee.
"Thought you might need a break," Lucas said, offering her a cup.
"Thank you," Chloe replied, taking a sip with a genuine smile. "How is your mother doing?"
"She's great. She's inside teaching a cooking class," Lucas smiled, looking around the peaceful garden. "She asks about you every day."
Silence settled between them, no longer heavy with bitterness, but filled with mutual respect and newfound understanding.
"I never got to say this properly," Lucas said softly, looking into her eyes. "I'm proud of the person you've become, Chloe."
Chloe looked down at her hands, no longer soft, but capable and strong. "It took losing everything to finally find what matters."
