Chapter 1 - The Broken PromiseThe wedding ring lay gleaming on the wet poolside tile, reflecting the twilight sky. Chloe stood frozen in her pristine lace wedding dress, her mouth half-open in shock as she watched Lucas pull his dripping, gasping mother from the pool.
"Lucas... I didn't know," Chloe stammered, her voice trembling as guests whispered in hushed, horrified tones around the decorated estate. "She was just... she wasn't dressed like family! She spilled water on my shoes!"
Lucas stripped off his tuxedo jacket and wrapped it tenderly around his mother, Evelyn. His eyes, usually filled with warmth and devotion, burned with an icy rage as he looked up at Chloe.
"She wasn't dressed like family because she spent the last ten years working sixteen-hour shifts as a housekeeper to pay for my law degree," Lucas said, his voice ringing across the patio like a gavel striking wood. "She wore that uniform with pride because it put food on our table. But you... you wear thousands of dollars in silk, yet you have no heart."

"There is no wedding," he stated coldly. He scooped his mother into his arms and walked away from the stunned crowd, leaving Chloe standing alone by the water, tears ruining her flawless makeup as the whispers grew louder.
