Chapter 4 - The UnravelingBefore Chloe could answer, commotion erupted inside the ballroom. Federal auditors accompanied by police officers walked straight toward Richard Sterling.
"Richard Sterling," an officer announced loudly. "You are under arrest for corporate tax evasion, fraud, and embezzlement of company pension funds."
Gasps echoed throughout the hall. Handcuffs clicked around Richard’s wrists as he was escorted out in front of dozens of cameras. Chloe rushed forward, screaming for her father, but security blocked her path.
In the chaotic aftermath, Chloe realized the terrifying truth: her father had been cooking the books for years to maintain their lavish lifestyle. Everything she grew up believing was a lie.
Sitting on a park bench outside the venue in the freezing midnight air, wrapped only in her thin dress, Chloe broke down completely. She had no money, no home left to return to, and no friends who would take her calls.
A shadow fell over her. She looked up to see Evelyn standing there, holding a warm woolen coat.
Evelyn gently placed the coat over Chloe's shivering shoulders. "Come inside out of the cold, child."

Chloe stared at the elderly woman in utter disbelief. "Why... why are you helping me? After what I did to you?"
"Because," Evelyn said softly, "leaving someone to freeze doesn't heal my bruises. Sit with me."
