Chapter 5 - THE EXECUTION STAYED
An hour later, the governor signed an emergency stay of execution. Mom’s handcuffs were removed. The charges against her were officially suspended pending a full new investigation.
When they led Douglas away in cuffs—this time as the suspect—he didn’t shout or fight anymore. He just stared at the floor, broken by the very truth he thought had died with my father.
I knelt down in front of Mason, taking his small hands in mine. “You were so brave,” I told him, my voice thick with tears. “You saved her life.”

Outside the prison walls, reporters were already gathering, phones buzzing with the news that had turned everything upside down. But we didn’t care about cameras or headlines. We only cared that for the first time in six years, our family was whole again.
