Chapter 3: The Morning After

I didn’t cry after the slap.
I went upstairs to the guest bathroom in their mansion, locked the door, and looked at myself in the mirror. The bruise on my cheek was already darkening. My lip was split. Blood had dried on my chin.
I touched the wedding ring on my finger.
Forty-eight hours.
That was how long it had taken for the mask to slip.
