Chapter 1: The Slap

The coffee was still steaming when the slap landed.

It happened so fast I didn’t even have time to flinch. Arthur’s hand connected with my cheek with a sharp crack that echoed through the breakfast room. Hot coffee sloshed over the edge of my cup and burned my fingers, but I barely felt it. The pain in my face came a second later — sharp, burning, and humiliating.

His mother, Margaret, kept buttering her toast like nothing had happened. His father, Richard, sighed heavily and looked down at his newspaper. His sister, Clara, smiled into her coffee cup as if she had just won a prize.

I stood there in my silk robe, still wearing the diamond wedding ring Arthur had placed on my finger less than forty-eight hours ago, with blood slowly filling my mouth from where my teeth had cut my cheek.

Arthur stood over me, breathing hard, his face red with rage.

“I told you,” he hissed. “In this house, you don’t tell my sister what to do. You don’t tell anyone in my family what to do. You are a guest here. You will learn your place.”

I wiped the blood from my lip with the back of my hand and looked at him.

Then I said the words calmly, clearly, and without a single tremor in my voice.

“You have no idea what I’m capable of.”

The room went completely silent.

Margaret’s knife froze mid-air on the toast. Richard lowered his newspaper. Clara’s smile disappeared.

Arthur’s face changed. For the first time since I had known him, I saw a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes.

Because in that moment, the woman he thought he had married — the quiet, agreeable business consultant — was gone.

And something far more dangerous had taken her place.
