Chapter 5 - The Warning in the Dark

A cold realization settled deep inside Maya’s chest.

"How long have you been in this room, Noah?"

"I don't know," he whimpered. "Does this room have any windows?"

He slowly shook his head against the wall.

"The light goes away when she leaves."

Maya reached into her dark apron pocket and pulled out her personal emergency cell phone—the one she kept entirely separate from the estate's internal communication system.

"I'm calling for help right now," she declared firmly.

"No!"

The sheer panic in Noah's voice exploded so suddenly he slammed his shoulder against the concrete wall trying to grab her hands.

"Please... don't tell Dad!"

Maya froze, her fingers hovering over the screen. "Noah, your father has to know about this."

"He already does," Noah sobbed quietly.

"What?" Maya breathed, her mind reeling.

"She showed me a video on her tablet," Noah whispered, tears spilling onto his sweater. "Dad said... to do whatever the doctor recommends."

The words struck Maya like a blow to the chest.

She suddenly remembered Jonathan saying those exact words over breakfast weeks ago. He had been staring at his phone, completely disengaged, while Celeste casually discussed Noah's "specialized medical treatment."

It had sounded like a mundane parenting statement back then.

Celeste had twisted it into a weapon to crush a nine-year-old child's hope.

Noah wiped his face with his sleeve. "She told me Dad sent me here because... because I keep lying about my mother."

Maya stared at the terrified boy hiding in the wall.

Three years earlier, during Evelyn Hawthorne's final days in hospice care, Maya had sat beside her bed late into the night.

Evelyn had squeezed Maya’s hand with surprising strength, her breath shallow.

"If I'm ever gone..." Evelyn had rasped, looking deep into Maya's eyes, "...and Noah tells you he's afraid... believe him before you believe anyone else."

Maya had assumed it was simply a grieving, dying mother's lingering anxiety.

Now, standing in the cold hallway of the west wing, she realized the terrifying truth.

It had been a warning.
