Chapter 1 - The Code in the Quiet

Three quick knocks.
Two slow ones.
Then three quick knocks again.
Maya Bennett stopped halfway down the narrow servants' corridor. A silver tray laden with untouched champagne flutes balanced carefully in her gloved hands.
Above her, the Hawthorne mansion sparkled with high-society elegance.
Crystal chandeliers bathed the grand ballroom in warm, golden light. A string quartet played a delicate melody in the background. Wealthy donors mingled beneath towering arrangements of white roses, laughing softly while staff in crisp uniforms moved through the crowd.
At the center of the lavish celebration stood Celeste Hawthorne.
Her midnight-blue gown shimmered as she glided gracefully among nearly two hundred high-profile guests. Diamonds rested against her neck, catching the light each time she offered a practiced smile.
"Every child," Celeste declared confidently into a microphone, her voice echoing through the ballroom speakers, "deserves a home where fear can never find them."
The room erupted in enthusiastic applause.
Maya barely noticed the speech.
She was listening to the wall.
For a long moment, there was only silence.
Then it came again.
Three short knocks.
Two long.
Three short.
The silver tray trembled violently in Maya’s hands.
She knew that rhythm. She had heard it years ago.
When Noah Hawthorne was only six, his mother, Evelyn, had turned that exact pattern into a secret game.
Evelyn had tapped a silver spoon gently against the nursery radiator while Maya folded fresh linens nearby.
Three short. Two long. Three short.
"If you ever need help but can't speak," Evelyn had told young Noah with a gentle laugh, "make this sound."
The little boy had giggled before copying the rhythm perfectly on the metal radiator.
Maya remembered Evelyn looking up at her, her soft smile fading for just a fraction of a second.
May you like
"You should remember it too, Maya," Evelyn had whispered.
Maya had never forgotten.
