Chapter 13 - A Mother's Final Vow

Maya took the leather journal gently, holding it like a sacred artifact.
She turned to the final entry, dated three days before Evelyn passed away.
The handwriting was shaky, written in blue ink that had faded over time:
"I know what Celeste is doing. She thinks I am too weak to notice the subtle comments, the way she pushes Jonathan away from Noah, the way she positions herself in our lives.
I cannot stop her from marrying Jonathan after I am gone—he is too blinded by his own grief to see through her smile.
But I have left the key with Maya. Maya loves my boy. She notices the quiet things.
If you are reading this, Maya, thank you for listening to the wall."
A single tear spilled over Maya’s eyelashes, dropping onto the faded paper.
She looked across the room at Noah, who had drifted into a peaceful, natural sleep, his stuffed fox held firmly in his small arms.
Jonathan walked over to Maya, dropping to one knee beside her chair.
"You saved my son's life, Maya," Jonathan said, tears glistening in his eyes. "I proved myself unfit to be his protector because I was too cowardly to face my own grief."
"You were hurting, Mr. Hawthorne," Maya said quietly. "Celeste weaponized your grief against you."
"That is no excuse," Jonathan replied firmly. "Starting today, things change. I'm stepping down from the corporate board. I'm taking Noah away from Greenwich. We're moving to our family cabin in Maine, where he can heal."

He took a quiet breath, looking at her with deep respect.
"I want you to come with us, Maya. Not as a servant. As Noah's legal guardian alongside me."
