Chapter 8: A Dangerous Close Call

Julian paced the length of the study, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the polished floorboards. He walked over to the mahogany bar cart, poured himself a double measure of neat bourbon, and swallowed it in a single, burning gulp. He slammed the crystal glass down onto the wooden surface hard enough to crack the rim. Evelyn barely dared to breathe, her muscles locked in rigid tension behind the heavy velvet drapes. She knew that if Julian decided to check his private safe right now, her cover would be instantly blown, leading to a catastrophic confrontation with no escape route. Julian muttered to himself about Beatrice’s betrayal, vowing to lock his mother out of the upcoming shareholder vote by any means necessary. He grabbed his phone from the desk and dialed a frantic number, barking hushed orders into the receiver to liquidate several offshore assets before the internal audit could flag them. Evelyn mentally recorded every detail of the conversation, her paralegal memory locking onto names of shell companies and foreign bank routing numbers. After a tense five minutes, Julian hung up the phone and strode toward the door, slamming it shut behind him as he descended to the lower levels of the house. Evelyn waited a full three minutes in absolute silence, listening to ensure he wasn't lingering in the hallway. When she finally stepped out from behind the drapes, her legs trembled slightly from the prolonged exertion. She knew she could not risk staying in the house a moment longer today. She quietly slipped out of the study, descended the back staircase used by the domestic staff, and made her way to the detached garage. Climbing into her modest sedan—the only vehicle left in her name—she drove out of the estate gates before Julian’s security detail even noticed her departure. She headed straight for a modest, downtown law office belonging to Marcus Vance, a brilliant forensic accountant and former colleague who specialized in corporate fraud cases. Sitting across from Marcus in his cluttered, paper-strewn office, Evelyn placed her encrypted flash drive and detailed notes onto the scarred wooden desk. Marcus listened intently as she recounted the events of the past week, his expression darkening with professional concern. He warned her that gathering this level of evidence against a man as powerful as Julian was extraordinarily dangerous. Evelyn looked him dead in the eye, her voice calm and resolute, stating that danger was preferable to a lifetime of living as a prisoner. Marcus nodded slowly, recognizing the fierce maternal steel in her demeanor, and agreed to help her construct an airtight legal case that would strip Julian of his corporate empire and secure full, untrammeled custody of Lily.
