Chapter 5: The Mask of Compliance

Morning sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains of the breakfast parlor, casting a pale gold glow over the silver tea service. Julian sat at the head of the long mahogany table, scanning the financial columns of the morning newspaper while sipping black coffee. He wore a crisp charcoal suit, his dark hair slicked back with military precision, showing no physical trace of the previous night’s humiliation beyond a faint purplish shadow along his jawline. Evelyn entered the room wearing a simple, elegant cream-colored silk blouse and tailored trousers, projecting an image of serene domestic tranquility. She poured herself a cup of tea with deliberate slowness, her hands entirely steady under Julian’s suspicious gaze. Julian lowered the newspaper, his eyes narrowing as he searched her face for defiance, expecting her to still be cowering from his public reprimand. Instead, Evelyn offered a polite, distant smile, asking quietly if he required anything further for his meeting with the board of directors this afternoon. The unexpected compliance threw Julian off balance; he cleared his throat awkwardly, muttering a curt refusal before returning to his reading. Lily skipped into the room a moment later, dressed in her school uniform with a bright yellow backpack slung over her small shoulders. The girl cast a wary glance toward her father, staying close to Evelyn’s side. Julian barely looked up as his daughter wished him a good morning, merely grunting a brief acknowledgment before turning the page. Evelyn walked Lily out to the waiting limousine, kneeling to adjust the girl's collar and whisper words of encouragement for her classes. She watched the sleek black vehicle pull away down the long driveway, feeling a profound sense of urgency. With Julian occupied at corporate headquarters all day, she had a precious window of opportunity to execute the first phase of her agreement with Beatrice. Back inside the mansion, she headed straight for Julian’s private study on the third floor, using a master key card Beatrice had discreetly slipped into her pocket during breakfast. The room was vast, smelling of rich mahogany and expensive cigar smoke. She booted up Julian’s desktop computer, inserting her encrypted flash drive into the USB port. The screen flickered to life, granting her direct access to the internal network of the family holding company. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, downloading restricted shareholder logs and confidential merger proposals that revealed a pattern of illegal insider trading. Every document she copied brought her one step closer to freedom, but the digital clock ticking in the corner reminded her that time was running out before Julian’s erratic schedule brought him home unexpectedly.
