Chapter 7: The Hidden Ledger

Back at the mansion, Evelyn carefully ejected the flash drive from Julian’s desktop computer and wiped her digital footprints clean from the system logs. She stood up, stretching her stiff shoulders, and began to put the study back into pristine order. As she slid the master key card into her pocket, her eyes caught a small brass floor safe half-hidden behind the heavy velvet drapes of the bay window. She knelt beside it, testing the combination lock out of pure instinct. Remembering Julian’s obsession with significant dates, she tried their wedding anniversary numbers, but the heavy steel dial refused to budge. She paused, closing her eyes and breathing deeply to calm her racing pulse. She tried Lily’s birthday combined with her own birth year. With a soft, mechanical click, the heavy steel door swung open. Inside lay not stacks of cash or illegal firearms, but a series of leather-bound physical ledgers filled with handwritten notes and official corporate seals. Evelyn pulled the top ledger out, flipping through the yellowed pages covered in Julian’s meticulous handwriting. The entries detailed a complex web of bribery, kickbacks, and asset stripping designed to siphon millions of dollars out of Vanguard Holdings into private accounts registered in the Cayman Islands. This was the smoking gun Beatrice had suspected existed, far more damaging than the digital files Evelyn had copied from the network. Suddenly, the distant rumble of a car engine pulling up the driveway echoed through the open window. Panic seized her chest. Julian had returned home hours earlier than expected, likely driven by paranoia after the disastrous board meeting. Evelyn shoved the ledger back into the safe, spun the combination dial, and locked it securely just as heavy footsteps began pounding up the grand staircase. She slipped behind the heavy floor-to-ceiling drapes, pressing her back flat against the cold glass of the window, holding her breath. The study door burst open with a violent crash. Julian strode into the room, breathing heavily, muttering furious curses under his breath about disloyal board members and meddling mothers. He paced back and forth across the Persian rug just feet away from where Evelyn stood concealed in the heavy velvet shadows. She could smell his expensive cologne mixed with the metallic scent of pure rage. Every second stretched into an eternity as she prayed Lily remained safely downstairs with the nanny.
