Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF ADRIAN’S TRUTH

Adrian was not permitted inside the building.

He left the flash drive with security and waited in the lobby until police arrived.

Naomi examined it on an isolated computer.

The drive contained a video.

Vanessa sat inside a parked car.

Her face was clearly visible.

She wrote a message on the back of my hospital photograph.

Then she placed it inside the white envelope.

Adrian had recorded her secretly.

“Why would he record his own mistress?” Maya asked.

“Insurance,” Naomi said.

“People like Adrian never trust their partners.”

The drive also contained messages between Adrian and Vanessa.

At first, they discussed leaving their spouses and building a life together.

Then the messages changed.

Vanessa pressured him to complete the condo transfer.

She threatened to reveal the entire scheme if he failed.

Adrian begged her for more time.

On the evening of the dinner, Vanessa sent one final message.

Get Claire’s signature tonight.

Do whatever is necessary.

The words did not excuse Adrian.

They proved motive.

He had been under pressure.

He had chosen violence.

Adrian requested to speak with me through Naomi.

I refused.

Then he sent a recorded statement.

“Claire.”

“I know I have no right to ask you for anything.”

“You were never supposed to be hurt.”

I paused the recording.

Maya looked at me.

“Do you want to stop?”

“No.”

I pressed play.

“My father said the dinner would convince you.”

“Vanessa said you would surrender once everyone agreed.”

“I lost control when you embarrassed me.”

“I know that is not an excuse.”

“I loved you.”

“I still love you.”

“I need you to believe that.”

I switched off the recording.

Adrian still believed love could exist beside calculated theft.

He believed saying the word transformed everything that came before it.

The next section of the flash drive included bank records.

Adrian had been secretly moving money away from Vanessa and Charles.

He opened an account in the Cayman Islands.

More than $900,000 had been deposited.

Some came from the vineyard.

Some came from Caldwell Urban Holdings.

Adrian had been stealing from the people who were helping him steal from me.

Naomi smiled without humor.

“The empire is eating itself.”

Federal agents arrested Vanessa the next morning.

She was charged with conspiracy, forgery, attempted extortion, and bribery.

Her law office was searched.

Investigators recovered property records connected to seventeen other victims.

One was an eighty-two-year-old widow named Margaret Hayes.

Vanessa had transferred Margaret’s home using a forged signature.

The property was sold to a Caldwell company.

Margaret now lived in a nursing facility she could not afford.

Another victim was a restaurant owner who refused to sell his building.

Health inspectors suddenly closed his business after receiving false complaints.

Charles later purchased the property for half its value.

The Caldwell fortune had not been built only with wine.

It had been built by identifying people with less power and making resistance too expensive.

My case became the thread investigators could finally pull.

Adrian offered to cooperate.

In exchange, he wanted a reduced sentence and dismissal of the assault charge.

I attended the prosecutor’s meeting.

Adrian sat across from me in handcuffs.

The bruise on my temple had turned yellow.

He stared at it.

“I am sorry.”

I said nothing.

His attorney explained that Adrian could provide evidence against Charles, Eleanor, Vanessa, and several public officials.

The prosecutor asked whether I would oppose a reduced sentence.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at me.

“Claire.”

“You did not help because it was right.”

“You helped because your secret account was discovered.”

“I can still expose my father.”

“Then expose him.”

“But you will answer for what you did to me.”

His eyes filled with anger.

The old Adrian returned.

“You always thought you were better than us.”

“No.”

I stood.

“I simply stopped pretending you were better than everyone else.”

As I left, Adrian called after me.

“My father has your original deed.”

I stopped.

Naomi turned.

May you like

Adrian leaned forward.

“He can still take the condo.”
