Chapter 2 - THE DOCUMENT IN THE STUDY

The paramedics wanted to transport me to the hospital immediately.

I refused to leave until the deputies documented everything inside the dining room.

Adrian’s family had already started cleaning.

One of his aunts gathered the broken porcelain with a napkin.

A cousin attempted to remove the bloodstained tablecloth.

Deputy Nolan stopped them.

“This room is now a crime scene.”

Eleanor looked offended.

“This is a private residence.”

“That does not make evidence private.”

Maya stayed close to me.

She kept glancing toward the second floor.

“You said they wanted me to sign something.”

“They planned to give it to you after dessert.”

“What was it?”

“I only saw part of it.”

“Where?”

“Charles’s study.”

Deputy Nolan heard us.

“What kind of document?”

Maya lowered her voice.

“A property-transfer agreement.”

My condo was not merely being discussed.

The paperwork had already been prepared.

Charles appeared in the doorway.

“That is a lie.”

Maya flinched.

He pointed at her.

“You have always been jealous of this family.”

Maya was married to Adrian’s older brother, Grant.

She had entered the Caldwell family four years before I did.

Unlike me, she rarely challenged them.

I had mistaken her silence for acceptance.

Now I recognized it as survival.

Deputy Nolan asked Charles for permission to search the study.

Charles refused.

“You have no warrant.”

The deputy looked at the blood on my face.

“Then no one enters that room until we obtain one.”

Charles’s expression changed.

He had not expected resistance.

At the hospital, doctors closed the wound with seven stitches.

The scan showed no skull fracture.

I had a concussion and severe bruising.

A nurse photographed every injury for the police report.

As she cleaned the blood from my hair, my phone filled with messages.

Some came from Adrian.

You have destroyed my life.

Tell the police it was an accident.

My father will make sure you regret this.

Others came from relatives who had watched the assault.

Please do not involve my name.

You know Adrian did not mean it.

Think about the family.

Not one message asked whether I was alive.

Then I received a photograph from Maya.

She had taken it earlier that evening.

It showed a folder on Charles’s desk.

Across the top were the words:

IRREVOCABLE PROPERTY TRANSFER AND FAMILY TRUST AGREEMENT.

My name appeared beneath them.

Claire Bennett.

The final page carried a signature.

It looked like mine.

It was not.

I called Deputy Nolan.

“They forged my signature.”

His voice became serious.

“Do not contact anyone in the family.”

“Can you search the study now?”

“We are preparing a warrant.”

“What happens to Adrian?”

“He will be booked tonight.”

“Will he be released?”

“Probably.”

The answer frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

My doctor ordered me not to drive.

Maya offered to take me home.

Deputy Nolan stopped her in the hospital lobby.

“Mrs. Caldwell, we need to ask you several questions.”

Maya looked at me.

“Go with him.”

“I don’t want you alone.”

“I won’t be.”

I called my closest friend, attorney Naomi Pierce.

She arrived thirty minutes later wearing sneakers beneath a business suit.

When she saw my face, every trace of exhaustion vanished.

“Who did this?”

“Adrian.”

Her eyes hardened.

“Where is he?”

“In custody.”

“For tonight.”

Naomi understood immediately.

She sat beside me.

“Claire, is the condo legally separate property?”

“Yes.”

“I bought it three years before the marriage.”

“Did Adrian ever make mortgage payments?”

“No.”

“Did you ever add him to the deed?”

“No.”

“Good.”

I showed her Maya’s photograph.

Naomi read the document title.

“This is not only a transfer.”

“What is it?”

“It appears they were trying to place your property inside a Caldwell family trust.”

“What would that mean?”

“You would lose control.”

“Could they sell it?”

“If the forged agreement were accepted, yes.”

I stared at the photograph.

The condo was worth almost two million dollars.

But I suddenly understood that its market value was not the only reason they wanted it.

My building stood beside a major redevelopment zone.

Six months earlier, I had heard rumors that a technology company wanted to expand nearby.

If the company purchased surrounding properties, values could double.

Naomi zoomed in on the document.

A company name appeared in the corner.

Caldwell Urban Holdings.

I had never heard of it.

Naomi searched the corporate registration database.

The company had been formed eight months earlier.

Its directors were Charles, Eleanor, Adrian, and Grant.

The listed business purpose was residential redevelopment.

My condominium’s address appeared as the company’s proposed headquarters.

They had created a company around property they did not own.

My phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from my building’s management office.

The subject line read:

I had never authorized a sale.
