Chapter 4 - THE HUSBAND WHO CAME HOME

Adrian was released the following afternoon.

A judge issued a temporary order prohibiting him from contacting me.

He was also ordered to remain away from my condo.

Naomi warned me not to return alone.

We arrived with two private security officers and a locksmith.

My front door was already open.

Adrian stood in the living room.

His suit jacket lay across the sofa.

A glass of whiskey rested in his hand.

He looked like a man relaxing inside a home he believed belonged to him.

Naomi stepped forward.

“You are violating a protective order.”

Adrian smiled.

“This is my marital residence.”

“The deed says otherwise.”

“I have clothing here.”

“That does not give you permission to enter after being ordered to stay away.”

Adrian looked at my bandage.

For one moment, something resembling regret crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

“You made me spend the night in jail.”

“You put me in the hospital.”

“You humiliated my mother.”

“She tried to steal my home.”

His jaw tightened.

“No one was stealing anything.”

“Then why was a forged deed submitted?”

He did not answer.

Naomi held up her phone.

“The police are already coming.”

Adrian set down the glass.

“Claire, tell her to leave.”

“No.”

“We need to discuss this as husband and wife.”

“We stopped being husband and wife when you used a plate as a weapon.”

His eyes became cold.

“That condo would have saved my family.”

“From what?”

He glanced toward Naomi.

“This is private.”

“Nothing involving my property is private from my attorney.”

Adrian moved closer.

The security officers stepped between us.

He laughed bitterly.

“You always needed an audience.”

“I had twenty witnesses when you hit me.”

“Exactly.”

His voice dropped.

“You knew I couldn’t defend myself in front of everyone.”

I stared at him.

“You believe you are the victim?”

“I lost control for one second.”

“You picked up a plate.”

“I was angry.”

“You swung it.”

“You provoked me.”

There it was.

The sentence every Caldwell expected me to accept.

I provoked him.

Therefore, he was not responsible.

I walked toward the bedroom.

My jewelry box had been emptied.

My passport was gone.

Several property files were missing.

Adrian followed until the security officer blocked him.

“Where are my documents?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is my passport?”

“You probably misplaced it.”

I opened the closet.

A large suitcase stood near the wall.

Inside were my clothes.

Not Adrian’s.

Mine.

Someone had packed them.

Beneath the suitcase was a printed lease application for a one-bedroom apartment in Oakland.

The applicant was Claire Bennett.

The emergency contact was Adrian Caldwell.

My supposed move-in date was Friday.

The same day as the redevelopment deadline.

They planned to remove me from my condo before transferring it.

Naomi photographed everything.

Police arrived minutes later.

Adrian was arrested for violating the protective order.

Before they took him away, he leaned toward me.

“You have no idea what my father will do to protect this family.”

I held his stare.

“Your father should start protecting himself.”

After he left, the locksmith changed every lock.

The security team searched the rooms.

Inside Adrian’s desk, they found a prepaid phone.

It contained messages between him and Charles.

She is becoming suspicious.

Keep her away from the recorder’s office until Friday.

If she refuses at dinner, make her understand there is no alternative.

The final message had been sent one hour before Adrian struck me.

Charles had not explicitly ordered his son to hurt me.

He had done something worse.

He had reminded Adrian that failure was unacceptable.

Another conversation mentioned Grant.

Maya’s husband.

Grant had written:

Do not involve me in Claire’s transfer.

Charles replied:

You are already involved.

Every Caldwell was being controlled by the same secret.

I called Maya.

She did not answer.

Then I received a message from her phone.

Please do not contact me again.

I stared at the words.

May you like

Maya had risked everything to defend me.

She would never send that message willingly.
