Chapter 1 - THE SIRENS AT THE GATE

The sirens grew louder as they passed through the vineyard gates.
For the first time that evening, the Caldwell family stopped behaving like people who controlled the world.
Eleanor moved toward Adrian.
“Tell them she attacked you first.”
Adrian stared at his mother.
“What?”
“She threw the plate.”
The calmness in her voice terrified me.
She was not confused.
She was manufacturing a defense.
Charles immediately understood.
He turned toward the relatives around the table.
“Everyone saw Claire become aggressive.”
Several people lowered their eyes.
Others nodded.
They were preparing to lie before the police had even entered the house.
Maya remained between Adrian and me.
“No one is changing the story.”
Eleanor glared at her.
“You will keep your mouth shut.”
Maya’s face became pale.
Still, she did not move.
Red and blue lights flashed across the dining-room windows.
The front doors opened.
Two sheriff’s deputies entered with their hands near their holsters.
Paramedics followed them carrying medical bags.
Deputy Nolan looked at the blood covering my blouse.
“Who struck you?”
“My husband.”
I pointed toward Adrian.
“He hit me with a dinner plate after I refused to surrender my condominium to his mother.”
Adrian lifted both hands.
“That is not what happened.”
Deputy Nolan turned toward him.
“Step away from the table.”
“My wife became hysterical.”
“Step away from the table now.”
Adrian obeyed.
A paramedic led me toward a chair and began examining the wound beside my temple.
The room tilted when he shined a light into my eyes.
“You may have a concussion.”
“I need to answer their questions.”
“You can answer while I treat you.”
Deputy Nolan photographed the broken porcelain.
He photographed the blood on the tablecloth.
He photographed the food splattered across the wall behind my chair.
Adrian began speaking rapidly.
“She insulted my mother.”
“She threatened my family.”
“She grabbed the plate first.”
I looked around the table.
“Ask the witnesses.”
Deputy Nolan turned toward the relatives.
“Did anyone see what happened?”
No one spoke.
Twenty adults had watched Adrian strike me.
Now the room was filled with cowards.
Then Maya stepped forward.
“I saw everything.”
Eleanor’s voice cut through the room.
“Maya.”
Maya looked at her mother-in-law.
“Adrian picked up the plate.”
“He stood over Claire.”
“Then he swung it into the side of her head.”
Adrian’s face twisted.
“You lying little—”
Deputy Nolan moved immediately.
“Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You cannot arrest me in my own father’s house.”
“I can arrest you anywhere you commit a felony.”
Metal handcuffs closed around Adrian’s wrists.
Eleanor rushed toward the deputy.
“My son is a Caldwell.”
Deputy Nolan did not even look at her.
“Tonight, he is a suspect.”
Adrian turned his head toward me as he was led from the dining room.
“This marriage is over.”
I pressed a clean cloth against my wound.
“It ended when you raised the plate.”
Charles stepped toward me after Adrian disappeared through the doorway.
His expression was cold.
“You have made a terrible mistake.”
I looked at the shattered porcelain.
“No.”
“I finally stopped making one.”
A paramedic helped me stand.
As we moved toward the ambulance, Maya caught my hand.
Her fingers were trembling.
“Claire.”
“What is it?”
She glanced toward Eleanor and Charles.
Then she leaned closer.
“They didn’t only want your condo.”
My stomach tightened.
“What else did they want?”
May you like
Maya looked toward the hallway where Adrian had disappeared.
“They needed you to sign something tonight.”
