Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Estate

By Friday evening, the initial media storm had subsided into a tense, brooding quiet. I returned to the Moretti estate for the first time since the board meeting.

The house felt hollow. The dark velvet drapes had been pulled back, letting the warm golden light of the setting sun flood into the grand foyer, but the lingering ghost of the tragedy still hung heavy in the air.

I poured myself a glass of red wine in the kitchen and walked out onto the stone patio overlooking the sprawling vineyards that stretched toward the rolling hills of Tuscany.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel behind me.

I didn't turn around. "I told the security detail they weren't needed on the patio tonight."

"It's not security, Elena."

I froze. The voice was smooth, cultured, and carried an unmistakable undertone of menace.

I spun around. Standing at the edge of the patio, emerging from the shadows of the olive trees, was a man I hadn't seen in five years.

Dante Althaus.

He was an international corporate raider and a notorious underworld fixer who had once tried to execute a hostile takeover of Moretti Textiles a decade ago—before Marco and I successfully blocked him. He wore a crisp white linen suit, a diamond Rolex gleaming on his wrist, and a chilling, predatory smile.

"Dante," I said, my hand instinctively tightening around the stem of my wine glass. "You're trespassing."

"Am I?" Dante chuckled softly, stepping closer into the patio light. "Technically, my shell company currently holds eighteen percent of your restructured debt. Which means, my dear Elena, I am your most important creditor."

"You have no business here," I warned, setting my glass down on the stone table and squaring my shoulders. "If you're here to buy up cheap assets, you're wasting your time. The company is under federal protection."

Dante stopped a few feet away, his dark eyes scanning me up and down with clinical detachment.

"I'm not here for the company, Elena. I'm here for the missing ledger."

My blood ran cold. "What ledger?"

"Don't play games with me," Dante’s smile vanished, replaced by a hard, razor-sharp edge. "Vittorio was a fool, but he wasn't stupid. Before he was arrested, he hid a physical ledger containing the offshore bank routing numbers for a multi-billion-dollar international contraband syndicate we ran together. And rumor has it... Marco found it before he was killed."

The puzzle pieces violently slammed together in my mind. Marco hadn't just uncovered corporate fraud. He had stumbled into an international criminal cartel. That was why they murdered him. Not just for the company, but to protect a massive, global syndicate.

"If I had it," I lied smoothly, keeping my face completely expressionless, "the federal prosecutors would already have it."

Dante stepped forward, invading my space, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper. "Listen to me very carefully, widow. You might have outsmarted an old man and a pathetic corporate climber like Lucas. But you are playing in an ocean filled with sharks. Give me the ledger by midnight tomorrow, or the next funeral we attend at this estate... will be yours."

He turned on his heel, melting back into the shadows of the olive grove just as quickly as he had appeared.
