Chapter 1 - The Morgue at Midnight

The rain lashed against the narrow, high windows of the county municipal morgue like buckshot. I sat in my rented sedan across the wet asphalt, the engine idling quietly while the heater blew a faint, stale warmth against my knees. My fingers gripped the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles were bone-white.

Sofia’s words over the phone still echoed in my ears: They dumped his body at the ER entrance... Do not trust anyone.

It was 1:45 AM. The city of Florence was asleep, wrapped in a blanket of fog and stormy shadows. According to Vittorio’s grand funeral schedule, Marco’s open-casket viewing was supposed to happen tomorrow morning at the estate, followed by a swift, quiet burial in the family crypt. They wanted him underground before any independent pathologist could look at him. They wanted the truth buried six feet deep.

I killed the headlights, slipped out into the freezing downpour, and pulled the hood of my wool coat over my head.

The back service entrance of the municipal coroner's office was shadowed and recessed from the main street. I pressed my palm against the heavy metal door. To my surprise, it gave a soft click. Sofia had left it unlocked, just as she promised.

Slipping inside, I was hit instantly by the heavy, clinical smell of industrial disinfectant and chilled air. The hallway was cast in an eerie, sickly green glow from the emergency exit signs. My boots clicked softly on the linoleum floor as I navigated the maze of stainless-steel corridors, following the scent of formalin and the low hum of refrigeration units.

"Elena."

I spun around, my heart leaping into my throat.

Sofia Rossi stepped out from a side office, wearing a dark blue lab coat over her scrubs, her face pale and etched with exhaustion. She grabbed my arm and pulled me quickly into an empty examination room, slamming the door shut behind us.

"Thank God you made it," Sofia whispered, her eyes darting nervously toward the hallway. "Vittorio’s men have been sniffing around the hospital all evening. They’re looking for any excuse to move the body."

"Where is he, Sofia?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm, stripping away all the grief and replacing it with pure, cold adrenaline. "Show me my husband."

Sofia hesitated, swallowing hard. She walked to the back of the room, unlocked a heavy refrigerated vault door, and pulled out a rolling steel gurney covered by a white linen sheet.

My breath caught in my throat. The room seemed to shrink, the air turning ice-cold.

Sofia slowly peeled back the linen sheet.

There lay Marco. His skin was the color of ash, bruised purple along his jawline and neck—injuries that Vittorio’s makeup artists had desperately tried to mask for the viewing at the estate. But under the harsh fluorescent lights of the morgue, the truth was undeniable.

He hadn't died in a clean car accident. He had been brutally beaten.

"Look here, Elena," Sofia murmured, gently turning Marco’s head to the side.

Just beneath his left ear was a distinct, deep impression—a crescent-shaped bruise surrounded by broken skin.

"This wasn't blunt force from a steering wheel," Sofia explained professionally, though her hands shook. "This is a signature. This matches the heavy, custom-engraved gold signet ring that Vittorio Moretti wears on his right hand every single day. Your husband was murdered by his own father."

I reached out, my fingers trembling as I brushed a lock of dark hair away from Marco’s cold forehead. I leaned down and pressed a long, lingering kiss to his skin.

"You didn't die in vain, my love," I whispered fiercely against his ear. "I swear to you, every single person who touched you will pay with everything they have."

I stood up, pulling the heavy silver cufflink out of my coat pocket and placing it firmly in Sofia’s hand.

"Keep this safe," I instructed. "It belongs to Lucas. And Sofia? I need you to perform an official, uncompromised autopsy right now. Register it under a federal mandate using Marco’s secret contingency clause. Make sure every drop of blood, every fiber, and every bone scan is uploaded to an encrypted cloud server only I can access."

Sofia closed her fist around the cufflink, her jaw setting in a hard, determined line. "Done. Let's go to war, Elena."
