Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

The executive boardroom on the top floor of Moretti Textiles was a masterpiece of corporate intimidation. The massive mahogany table seated twenty people, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Florence skyline.
At 10:00 AM, the board members filed in, whispering nervously among themselves. Word had leaked that a hostile power play was underway.
Vance sat at the head of the table, flanked by his legal team and Lucas, who looked like he was about to vomit into his designer briefcase.
I walked in ten minutes late, carrying a single leather folder. Behind me walked two unexpected guests: federal prosecutor Matteo Rossi (Sofia’s brother), and senior forensic investigator Marcus Vance (no relation to Vittorio, an independent anti-corruption auditor).
Vance slammed his hand down on the mahogany table, standing up to his full height.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Vittorio roared. "Federal agents in my corporate headquarters? Elena, have you completely lost your mind? Security, throw these men out!"
"Sit down, Vittorio," I said, my voice cutting through the room with the sharpness of a razor. I pulled out my chair at the opposite end of the table and sat down, opening my leather folder.
"By what authority do you bring armed federal prosecutors into a private corporate session?" Lucas demanded, his voice cracking with panic.
I slid a multi-page document across the polished wood toward the lead director of the board.
"By the authority of the Marco Moretti Contingency Trust," I announced clearly, letting every word hang in the air. "Signed three months ago, this document legally overrides all secondary voting shares in the event of my husband’s incapacitation or unnatural death. Furthermore, it triggers an immediate forensic audit of all corporate accounts."
Vance laughed, a harsh, dismissive sound. "A contingency trust? Marco never signed anything of the sort! You forged those documents!"
"I didn't forge anything, Vittorio," I smiled coldly, pulling a flash drive from my pocket and plugging it into the boardroom’s main media console.
The massive flat-screen projector behind the table flickered to life.
Displayed on the screen wasn't a corporate spreadsheet. It was a high-resolution, unedited video file dated two weeks ago, showing Lucas and Vittorio sitting in Vittorio’s private study, laughing as they signed off on a fraudulent multi-million-dollar wire transfer to an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands.
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Directors shouted over one another, papers rustled, and Lucas slumped backward in his chair, staring at the screen in sheer, unadulterated horror.
"That... that's a deepfake!" Lucas shrieked, jumping to his feet. "She's framing us! It's computer-generated!"
"Is it?" Prosecutor Matteo Rossi stepped forward, opening his own briefcase and dropping thick physical folders in front of every board member. "We also have the bank transfer receipts, the IP addresses tied directly to Lucas’s personal laptop, and sworn affidavits from two whistleblowers within the logistics department whom you threatened."

Vance’s face turned an ugly, mottled purple. He turned his furious gaze on me, his hands shaking with rage. "You little bitch. You planned this. You set us up from the moment you stepped off that plane from Milan."
"No, Vittorio," I replied, standing up slowly and resting my palms flat against the table, leaning forward into his space. "I just followed the trail of breadcrumbs your greed left behind. You thought you could murder my husband, steal his empire, and sweep his body under the rug like trash. But you forgot one fundamental rule of business: never underestimate a woman who has nothing left to lose."
